The whipping

So then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him, and said, Hail, King of the Jews. And they struck him with their hands. So Pilate went out again and said to them, Look, I am bringing him out to you, so you may know I find no fault in him. Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Look at the man. So when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and crucify him. Because I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. So when Pilate heard that, he was all the more afraid. And he went back into the judgement hall and said to Jesus, Where are you from? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate said to him, Won't you speak to me? Don't you know I have power to crucify you, and power to release you? Jesus answered, You would have no power at all against me unless it had been given you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin. And from then on Pilate tried to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this man go, you aren't Caesar's friend. Anyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar. So when Pilate heard that, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgement seat, in a place called the Pavement — in Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the Preparation of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, Look at your King. But they cried out, Away with him, away with him. Crucify him. Pilate said to them, Should I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. So then he handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

So then Pilate took Jesus and whipped him. And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head. And they put a purple robe on him. And said: Hail, King of the Jews. And they struck him with their hands. So Pilate went out again and says to them: Look — I bring him out to you, so you can know I find no fault in him. Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate says to them: Look at the man. So when the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out: Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate says to them: You take him and crucify him. Because I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him: We've got a teaching, and by our teaching he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. So when Pilate heard that saying, he was more afraid. And went again into the hall of judgment and says to Jesus: Where are you from? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate says to him: Don't you speak to me? Don't you know I've got power to crucify you and have power to let you go? Jesus answered: You'd have no power at all against me unless it were given you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin. And from then on Pilate looked to let him go. But the Jews cried out: If you let this man go, you aren't Caesar's mate. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar. So when Pilate heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat, in a place called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he says to the Jews: Look at your King. But they cried out: Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate says to them: Will I crucify your King? The chief priests answered: We've got no king but Caesar. So then he handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

The crucifixion

And carrying his cross he went out to a place called the place of a skull — in Hebrew, Golgotha — where they crucified him, and two others with him, one on either side, and Jesus in the middle. And Pilate wrote a notice and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. Many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. And it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latin. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Don't write, The King of the Jews, but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four parts, one for each soldier, and also his tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. So they said among themselves, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see whose it will be — so the scripture might be fulfilled that says, They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. So that is what the soldiers did.

And he went out carrying his cross, into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha. Where they crucified him, and two others with him, one on either side and Jesus in the middle. And Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then plenty of the Jews read this title. Because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the town. And it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latin. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Don't write: The King of the Jews — but that he said: I'm King of the Jews. Pilate answered: What I've written, I've written. Then the soldiers, when they'd crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and his coat too. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top all through. So they said among themselves: Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it'll be — so the scripture could be carried out that says: They divided my clothes among them, and for my coat they cast lots. So that's what the soldiers did.

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Plain English

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

It's finished

Now standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. So when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, Woman, look at your son. Then he said to the disciple, Look at your mother. And from that hour that disciple took her into his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now finished, and so the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst. Now a jar full of vinegar was standing there. So they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it on hyssop and held it to his mouth. So when Jesus had taken the vinegar, he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. So when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple standing by who he loved, he says to his mother: Woman, look — your son. Then he says to the disciple: Look — your mother. And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus knowing everything was now finished, so the scripture could be carried out, says: I'm thirsty. Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it on hyssop and held it to his mouth. So when Jesus had taken the vinegar, he said: It's finished. And he bowed his head and gave up the ghost.

And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The burial

So the Jews, because it was the Preparation, and so the bodies wouldn't stay on the cross on the sabbath — because that sabbath was a high day — asked Pilate to have their legs broken and the bodies taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other man crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw he was already dead, they didn't break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and straight away blood and water came out. And the man who saw it has borne witness, and his witness is true. And he knows he is telling the truth, so you may believe. Because these things happened so the scripture might be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. And again another scripture says, They will look on him whom they pierced. And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus came too, the man who had first come to Jesus by night, and he brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. So they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the Jewish custom is for burial. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, where nobody had ever been laid. So they laid Jesus there, because of the Jews' day of Preparation, and because the tomb was close by.

So the Jews, because it was the day of getting ready, so the bodies wouldn't stay on the cross on the sabbath day — because that sabbath day was a high day — asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and that they could be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw he was dead already, they didn't break his legs. But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straight away there came out blood and water. And the one who saw it bore witness, and his witness is true. And he knows what he says is true, so you can believe. Because these things were done so the scripture could be carried out: Not a bone of him will be broken. And again another scripture says: They'll look on the one they've pierced. And after this Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus but secretly because he was frightened of the Jews, asked Pilate that he could take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus came too, who at first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight. Then they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen cloths with the spices, the way the Jews bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, that nobody had ever been laid in. So they laid Jesus there because of the Jews' day of getting ready, because the tomb was close.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

31

So the Jews, because it was the Preparation, and so the bodies wouldn't stay on the cross on the sabbath — because that sabbath was a high day — asked Pilate to have their legs broken and the bodies taken away.

Plain English

So the Jews, because it was the day of getting ready, so the bodies wouldn't stay on the cross on the sabbath day — because that sabbath day was a high day — asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and that they could be taken away.

32

So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other man crucified with him.

34

Plain English

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straight away there came out blood and water.

King James Version, 1611

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35

And the man who saw it has borne witness, and his witness is true. And he knows he is telling the truth, so you may believe.

Plain English

And the one who saw it bore witness, and his witness is true. And he knows what he says is true, so you can believe.

King James Version, 1611

And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36

Because these things happened so the scripture might be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken.

Plain English

Because these things were done so the scripture could be carried out: Not a bone of him will be broken.

King James Version, 1611

For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37

And again another scripture says, They will look on him whom they pierced.

Plain English

And again another scripture says: They'll look on the one they've pierced.

King James Version, 1611
