Job 35

Elihu spoke again: "Do you think this is right, that you said, 'My righteousness is more than God's'? For you said, 'What advantage will it be to you? What profit will I have if I am cleansed from my sin?' I will answer you, and your companions with you.

Look at the heavens

Elihu spoke again: "Do you think this is right, that you said, 'My righteousness is more than God's'? For you said, 'What advantage will it be to you? What profit will I have if I am cleansed from my sin?' I will answer you, and your companions with you. Look up at the heavens and see; look at the clouds, which are higher than you. If you sin, what do you accomplish against him? If your wrongdoings multiply, what do you do to him? If you are righteous, what do you give him? What does he receive from your hand? Your wickedness may hurt a man like yourself, and your righteousness may profit the son of man. By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed cry out; they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. But no one says, 'Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of heaven?' There they cry, but no one gives answer because of the pride of evil men. Surely God will not listen to empty cries, and the Almighty will not give them regard. Although you say you will not see him, judgment is before him; so trust in him. But now, because it is not so, he has visited in his anger, yet he does not know it in great extremity. So Job opens his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge."

And Elihu spoke: Do you think this is right — that you said: My righteousness is more than God's? Because you said: What's the use of it to you? And: What do I get more than if I'd sinned? I'll answer you, and your mates with you. Look at the heavens and see, and look at the clouds that are higher than you. If you sin, what do you do against him? Or if what you've stepped over is many, what do you do to him? If you're righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he get from your hand? Your wickedness might hurt a man like you, and your righteousness might help a son of man. Because of the many crushings they make people cry out. They cry out because of the arm of the mighty. But nobody says: Where's God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, who teaches us more than the animals of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the sky? They cry out there, but nobody answers, because of the pride of evil men. God definitely won't hear emptiness, and the Almighty won't take any notice of it. How much less when you say you won't see him. But judgment is in front of him, so trust in him. But now, because it isn't so, he's dealt with them in his anger. But he doesn't take much notice of pride. So Job opens his mouth for nothing. He heaps up words without knowledge.

Elihu spake moreover, and said, Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God’s? For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin? I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee. Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou. If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him? If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand? Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man. By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night; Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men. Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it. Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him. But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity: Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
