Satan strikes Job
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came among them to present himself before the LORD as well. The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered, "From roaming through the earth and walking up and down in it." The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth — blameless and upright, a man who fears God and stays away from evil. He still holds fast to his integrity, even though you stirred me up against him to destroy him without cause." Satan answered the LORD, "Skin for skin. A man will give everything he has for his life. But reach out your hand and touch his bone and flesh, and he'll curse you to your face." The LORD said to Satan, "Very well. He is in your hand, but spare his life." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself with as he sat among the ashes. His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die." But he said to her, "You're talking like one of the foolish women. Should we receive good from God and not receive evil as well?" In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.
And there was a day again when the sons of God came to show themselves in front of the Lord, and Satan came among them too to show himself in front of the Lord. And the Lord said to Satan: Where have you come from? And Satan answered the Lord: From going up and down through the earth, and from walking about in it. And the Lord said to Satan: Have you thought about my servant Job, that there's nobody like him on earth, a whole and straight man who fears God and turns away from evil? And he still holds tight to being whole, though you stirred me up against him to wreck him for nothing. And Satan answered the Lord: Skin for skin. Yes, a man will give everything he's got for his life. But put out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he'll curse you to your face. And the Lord said to Satan: Look — he's in your hand. But save his life. So Satan went out from in front of the Lord and struck Job with bad sores from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. But he said to her: You talk like one of the stupid women talks. What — will we take good from God and not take bad? In all this Job didn't sin with his lips.

And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes. Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

The three friends
When Job's three friends heard about all the trouble that had come on him, each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. They had agreed to meet so they could mourn with him and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognise him. They raised their voices and wept; each tore his robe and threw dust into the air over his head. Then they sat with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word, because they could see how great his suffering was.
Now when Job's three mates heard about all this trouble that had come on him, they came each one from his own place — Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. Because they'd made a time together to come and be sorry with him and comfort him. And when they lifted up their eyes a long way off and didn't know him, they lifted up their voice and wept. And they each tore his robe and threw dust on their heads towards the sky. So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and nobody said a word to him. Because they saw his pain was very great.
