Do justice at the palace

This is what the LORD says: Go down to the house of the king of Judah and speak this word there. Say: Listen to the word of the LORD, king of Judah sitting on David's throne — you and your officials and your people who come in through these gates. This is what the LORD says: Do justice and righteousness. Get the one who's been robbed out of the hand of the oppressor. Don't do wrong or violence to the foreigner, the orphan or the widow, and don't spill innocent blood in this place. Because if you really do this thing, then kings sitting on David's throne will come in through the gates of this house, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their officials and their people. But if you won't listen to these words, I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that this house will be a desolation. Because this is what the LORD says about the house of the king of Judah: You're Gilead to me, the top of Lebanon. But I'll turn you into a wilderness, cities nobody lives in. And I'll set apart destroyers against you, each man with his weapons. They'll cut down your best cedars and throw them on the fire. And many nations will go past this city and say to each other: Why has the LORD done this to a great city like that? And they'll answer: Because they walked out on the covenant of the LORD their God and bowed down to other gods and served them.

And I'll set apart wreckers against you, each man with his weapons. They'll cut down your best cedars and throw them on the fire. And they'll answer: Because they walked out on the covenant of the Lord their God and bowed down to other gods and served them.

Thus saith the LORD; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word, And say, Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates: Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire. And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city? Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

Don't weep for the dead

Don't weep for the dead man and don't grieve for him. Weep hard for the one who's going away, because he won't come back and see the land where he was born. Because this is what the LORD says about Shallum son of Josiah king of Judah, who reigned in place of Josiah his father, who went out of this place: He won't come back here again. He'll die in the place they've carried him off to, and he won't see this land again. Trouble is coming to the man who builds his house with no righteousness and his upper rooms with no justice, who makes his neighbour work for nothing and doesn't give him his wages — Who says, I'll build myself a big house with roomy upper storeys, and cuts himself windows in it, and panels it with cedar and paints it red. Does it make you a king that you're competing in cedar? Your father ate and drank and did justice and righteousness, and it went well for him. He judged the case of the poor and needy, and it went well. Wasn't that knowing me? declares the LORD. But your eyes and your heart are on nothing but your own dishonest gain, and on spilling innocent blood, and on oppression and crushing people. So this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: They won't mourn for him — Oh my brother, oh my sister. They won't mourn for him — Oh master, oh his glory. He'll be buried with a donkey's burial — dragged out and thrown past the gates of Jerusalem.

Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country. For thus saith the LORD touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more: But he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more. Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work; That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion. Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him? He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the LORD. But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it. Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

10

King James Version, 1611

Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

King James Version, 1611

That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

15

Does it make you a king that you're competing in cedar? Your father ate and drank and did justice and righteousness, and it went well for him.

King James Version, 1611

Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?

16

He judged the case of the poor and needy, and it went well. Wasn't that knowing me? declares the LORD.

Plain English

He judged the case of the poor and needy, and it went well. Wasn't that knowing me? declares the Lord.

King James Version, 1611

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the LORD.

17

But your eyes and your heart are on nothing but your own dishonest gain, and on spilling innocent blood, and on oppression and crushing people.

King James Version, 1611

But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

19

He'll be buried with a donkey's burial — dragged out and thrown past the gates of Jerusalem.

King James Version, 1611

He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

Coniah the signet ring

Go up to Lebanon and cry; lift up your voice in Bashan and cry from the passages, because all your lovers are destroyed. I spoke to you when you were doing well, and you said, I won't listen. That's been your way since you were young — you haven't listened to my voice. The wind will shepherd all your shepherds, and those who loved you will go into captivity. Then you'll be ashamed and humiliated for all your wickedness. You who live in Lebanon and make your nest in the cedars — how you'll groan when the pains come on you, the pain of a woman in labour. As surely as I live, declares the LORD, even if Coniah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet ring on my right hand, I'd pull you off it. And I'll hand you over to those after your life, those whose faces you're frightened of — to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and to the Chaldeans. And I'll sling you out, and your mother who gave birth to you, into another country where you weren't born, and that's where you'll die. And the land they're longing to return to — they won't return to it. Is this man Coniah a breaked pot nobody wants, a thing nobody takes pleasure in? Why have he and his offspring been slung out and thrown into a land they don't know? Land, land, land — listen to the word of the LORD. This is what the LORD says: Write this man down as childless, a man who won't do well in his days. Because not one of his offspring will do well, sitting on David's throne and ruling in Judah again.

Go up to Lebanon and cry out. Let your voice go in Bashan and cry out from Abarim, because everyone who loved you is broken. I spoke to you when you were doing well, and you said, I won't listen. That's been your way since you were young — you haven't listened to my voice. The wind will shepherd all your shepherds, and the ones who loved you will go into captivity. Then you'll be ashamed and humiliated for all your wickedness. You who live in Lebanon and make your nest in the cedars — how you'll groan when the pains come on you, the pain of a woman in labour. And I'll hand you over to the ones after your life, the ones whose faces you're frightened of — to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Chaldeans. And I'll sling you out, and your mother who gave birth to you, into another country where you weren't born, and that's where you'll die. And the land they're longing to come back to — they won't come back to it. Is this man Coniah a smashed pot nobody wants, a thing nobody takes pleasure in? Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed. I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice. The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness. O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail! As I live, saith the LORD, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence; And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans. And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die. But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return. Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not? O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD. Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
