A scarecrow in a cucumber patch

Listen to the word the LORD speaks to you, people of Israel. This is what the LORD says: Don't learn the way of the nations and don't be frightened by the signs of heaven, though the nations are frightened by them. Because the customs of the peoples are nothing but a lie. Someone cuts a tree out of the forest, and the craftsman works it with a chisel. They dress it up with silver and gold and fasten it with hammer and nails so it won't fall over. They're like a scarecrow in a cucumber patch. They can't speak. They have to be carried, because they can't walk. Don't be afraid of them, because they can't do any harm — and they can't do any good either. There's nobody like you, Lord. You're great, and your name is great in strength. Who would not fear you, King of nations? It belongs to you. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you. They're all foolish together, and thick. The teaching of a block of wood is nothing. Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz — the work of the craftsman and of the goldsmith's hands. Blue and purple is their clothing. The whole lot of it is the work of skilled men. But the LORD is the true God. He is the living God and an everlasting King. At his fury the earth trembles, and the nations cannot endure his anger. Tell them this: The gods that didn't make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens. He made the earth by his strength. He set up the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. When he lets his voice go, there's a roar of waters in the heavens. He makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. Every man is thick with no knowledge. Every goldsmith is shamed by his carved image. Because what he cast is a lie, and there's no breath in it. They're nothing, work fit for a laugh. When they're dealt with, they'll be finished. The portion of Jacob isn't like these, because he's the one who shaped everything, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance. The LORD Almighty is his name.

You're great, and your name is great in strength. Who wouldn't fear you, King of the nations? It's owed to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms there's nobody like you. They're all stupid together, and thick. The teaching of a block of wood is nothing. Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz — the work of the craftsman and of the goldsmith's hands. Blue and purple is their clothing. The whole lot of it is the work of skilled men. But the Lord is the true God. He's the living God, the everlasting King. The earth shakes at his anger, and the nations can't stand up under his fury. Tell them this: The gods that didn't make the heavens and the earth will be finished off the earth and from under the heavens. Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee. But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities. Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men. But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

My tent is wrecked

Gather up your bundle off the ground, you who live under siege. Because this is what the LORD says: Look: this time I'll sling out the people who live in the land, and I'll press them hard so they feel it. Trouble is coming to me for my fracture. My wound is bad. But I said: This is my sickness, and I'll carry it. My tent is destroyed and all my ropes are snapped. My children have gone out from me and they're not here. There's nobody left to stretch out my tent or set up my curtains. Because the pastors have gone foolish and haven't looked for the LORD. So they haven't done well, and their whole flock is scattered. Listen — news is coming, a great commotion from the north, turning the towns of Judah into ruins and a home for jackals. LORD, I know that a person’s way is not in themselves; it is not in someone who walks to direct their own steps. Correct me, LORD, but with judgment — not in your anger, or you will bring me to nothing. Pour out your fury on the nations that don't know you and on the families that don't call on your name. Because they've eaten Jacob — eaten him up and finished him — and made his home a desolation.

Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress. For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so. Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it. My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains. For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered. Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons. O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
