Where do the wars and fights among you come from? Don't they come from your cravings, at war inside you? You want and you haven't got. You kill and crave what others have but still can't get hold of it. You fight and you brawl. You haven't got, because you don't ask. You ask and you don't get, because you ask with the wrong motives, to spend it on your own pleasures. You adulterers and adulteresses. Don't you know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think the scripture says for nothing, The spirit that lives in us longs to envy? But he gives more grace. That is why it says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Clean up your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you who are in two minds. Be sorry, mourn and weep. Turn your laughing into mourning and your joy into gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town, spend a year there, do business and make a profit. You don't even know what tomorrow holds. What is your life? You are a mist that shows up for a little while and then vanishes. What you ought to say is, If the Lord wants, we will live and do this or that. As it is, you boast about your plans. All such boasting is evil. So anyone who knows the right thing to do and doesn't do it — that is sin for him.

When you don't know what'll be tomorrow. Because what's your life? It's a vapour that shows for a little time and then goes away.
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
What you ought to say is, If the Lord wants, we will live and do this or that.
Instead you ought to say: If the Lord wants, we'll live and do this or that.
For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
As it is, you boast about your plans. All such boasting is evil.
But now you celebrate in your boastings. All boasting like that is evil.
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
So anyone who knows the right thing to do and doesn't do it — that is sin for him.
So to the one who knows to do good and doesn't do it, to him it's sin.
