The hand not too short

the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor is his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your wrongdoings have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. Because your hands are stained with blood and your fingers with wrongdoing. Your lips have spoken lies and your tongue mutters crookedness. Nobody calls for justice and nobody pleads a case in truth. They lean on emptiness and talk lies. They're pregnant with trouble and give birth to wrongdoing. They hatch viper' eggs and weave the spider's web. The one who eats their eggs dies, and what is crushed breaks out into a viper. Their webs won't make clothes, and they can't cover themselves with what they make. What they do is wrong, and the work of violence is in their hands. Their feet run to evil and they're quick to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of wrongdoing. Wreck and ruin are on their roads. They don't know the way of peace, and there's no justice on their tracks. They've made their paths crooked. Nobody who walks on them knows peace.

Look — the Lord's hand isn't too short to save, and his ear isn't too heavy to hear. But your wrongdoing has come between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so he won't hear. They hatch snake eggs and weave a spider's web. Whoever eats their eggs dies, and if you crush one an adder comes out.

Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

We grope along the wall

So judgment is far from us, and justice doesn't overtake us. We wait for light, but see darkness; for brightness, but we walk in gloom. We grope along the wall like blind men. We grope like men with no eyes. We stumble at noon like it's twilight. Among the strong ones we're like the dead. We all growl like bears and moan deeply like doves. We look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us. Because our rebellions have piled up before you, and our sins testify against us. Our rebellions are with us, and we know what we've done wrong — Rebelling and lying about the LORD, turning back from following our God, talking oppression and revolt, thinking up lying words in the heart and speaking them out. Judgment is turned away backward, and justice stands far off. Truth has fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yes, truth fails, and whoever departs from evil makes himself a prey. The LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

So justice is a long way off from us and righteousness doesn't reach us. We wait for light and there's darkness. We wait for brightness and we walk in gloom. We grope along the wall like blind men. We grope like men with no eyes. We stumble at noon like it's twilight. Among the strong ones we're like the dead. We all growl like bears and moan on and on like doves. We wait for justice and there's none, for salvation, and it's a long way off from us. Because our rebellions have piled up in front of you, and our sins testify against us. Our rebellions are with us, and we know what we've done wrong — rebelling and lying about the Lord, turning back from following our God, talking oppression and revolt, thinking up lying words in the heart and speaking them out. So justice is driven backwards and righteousness stands a long way off. Truth has fallen over in the street and honesty can't get in. Truth is missing, and whoever turns from evil gets robbed. The Lord saw it, and it was bad in his eyes that there was no justice.

Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness. We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men. We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us. For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them; In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

Plain English

Plain English

Plain English

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

His own arm brought salvation

He saw there was nobody to help and was shocked that no one stepped in. So his own arm brought him salvation, and his righteousness held him up. He put on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation on his head. He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing and was clad with zeal as a cloak. He'll repay them for what they've done — fury for his enemies and payback for his foes. He'll repay even the distant lands. So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him. The Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those in Jacob who turn from wrongdoing, says the LORD. And this is my covenant with them, says the LORD: My Spirit that's on you and my words that I've put in your mouth won't leave your mouth or the mouth of your offspring or the mouth of your offspring's offspring, says the LORD, from now on and forever.

He saw there was nobody, and he was appalled that there was no one to step in. So his own arm brought him salvation, and his own righteousness held him up. He put on righteousness like a breastplate and the helmet of salvation on his head. He put on the clothes of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal like a cloak. According to what they've done, that's how he'll pay them back — fury to his enemies, payment to his foes. He'll pay back the islands what's owing. So they'll fear the name of the Lord from the west and his glory from the rising of the sun. Because he'll come like a river in flood that the breath of the Lord drives along. And the redeemer will come to Zion, to the ones in Jacob who turn from rebellion, declares the Lord. And this is my covenant with them, says the Lord: My Spirit that's on you and my words that I've put in your mouth won't leave your mouth or the mouth of your offspring or the mouth of your offspring's offspring, says the Lord, from now on and forever.

And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
