The word to Cyrus

This is what the LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I've taken hold of to bring down nations before him and loosen the belts of kings, to open doors before him so the gates won't be shut: I'll go before you and level the rough places. I'll break the bronze doors in pieces and cut through the iron bars. I'll give you the treasures of the dark and the hoards hidden in secret places, so you'll know that I'm the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name. For the sake of Jacob my servant and Israel my chosen, I've called you by your name. I've given you a title, though you didn't know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. There is no God beside me. I strengthened you, even though you didn’t know me, so they may know from the rising of the sun and from the west that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. I form the light and create darkness. I make peace and create evil. I the LORD do all these things. Drop down, heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open, let salvation spring up, and let righteousness grow together. I the LORD have created it.

This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I've taken hold of to bring down nations in front of him and loosen the belts of kings, to open doors in front of him so the gates won't be shut: I'll go in front of you and level the rough places. I'll break the bronze doors in pieces and cut through the iron bars. I'll give you the treasures of the dark and the hoards hidden in secret places, so you'll know that I'm the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name. Apart from me there's no God. I'll strap you up, though you didn't know me, so people know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there's nobody apart from me. I'm the Lord, and there's nobody else. I shape the light and create the dark. I make peace and create disaster. I, the Lord, do all these things. Rain down, you heavens, from above. Let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open and let salvation come out, and let righteousness spring up with it. I, the Lord, have created it.

Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. The clay and the potter

Trouble is coming to the one who strives with his Maker — a broken piece of pottery among the broken pieces of pottery of the earth. Will the clay say to the one who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ Or will your work say, ‘He has no hands’ ? Trouble is coming to the one who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’ or to a woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ This is what the LORD, the Holy One of Israel and his Maker, says: ‘Ask me about things to come about my sons, and about the work of my hands command me.’ I made the earth and created human beings on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens and I gave the orders to all their host. I've raised him up in righteousness and I'll make all his ways straight. He'll build my city and let my exiles go, not for a price and not for a bribe, says the LORD Almighty.

Trouble is coming to the one who argues with the one who shaped him — a bit of broken pot arguing with the potsherds of the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, What are you making? Does his work say, He's got no hands? Trouble is coming to the one who says to a father, What are you fathering? or to a woman, What are you giving birth to? This is what the Lord says, the Holy One of Israel and the one who shaped him: Are you going to question me about my children, or give me orders about the work of my hands? I made the earth and created human beings on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens and I gave the orders to all their host. I've raised him up in righteousness and I'll make all his ways straight. He'll build my city and let my exiles go, not for a price and not for a bribe, says the Lord Almighty.

Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth? Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.

Turn to me and be saved

This is what the LORD says: ‘The labour of Egypt, the merchandise of Ethiopia and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you and be yours. They'll come after you; in chains they'll come over, bow down to you and plead with you, saying, “Surely God is in you, and there is none else; there is no God.”’ Truly you're a God who hides himself, God of Israel, the saviour. They'll all be ashamed and disgraced. The makers of idols will go off in disgrace together. But Israel is saved by the LORD with an everlasting salvation. You won't be ashamed or disgraced ever, for all time. This is what the LORD says, who created the heavens — God himself who formed the earth and made it, who established it. He didn't create it in vain; he formed it to be inhabited. ‘I am the LORD, and there is none else.’ I haven't spoken in secret, in a dark corner of the earth. I didn't say to the offspring of Jacob, Seek me for nothing. I'm the LORD, speaking righteousness, telling what's straight. Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations. Those who set up the wood of their carved idol and pray to a god that cannot save have no knowledge. Tell it and bring them near; let them take counsel together. Who declared this from ancient time? Who told it from that time? Wasn't it I, the LORD? There is no God beside me — a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. ‘Look to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, because I am God, and there is none else.’ ‘I have sworn by myself. The word has gone out of my mouth in righteousness and will not return: to me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear.’ They'll say of me: Only in the LORD is there righteousness and strength. Everyone who was raging at him will come to him and be ashamed. In the LORD all the seed of Israel will be justified and will glory.

This is what the Lord says: The wealth of Egypt and the trade of Cush and the Sabeans, tall men — they'll come over to you and be yours. They'll walk behind you. They'll come over in chains and bow down to you and beg you: God is with you and there's nobody else, no other God. Truly you're a God who hides himself, God of Israel, the saviour. They'll all be ashamed and disgraced. The makers of idols will go off in disgrace together. But Israel is saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation. I didn't say to the offspring of Jacob, Look for me for nothing. I'm the Lord, speaking righteousness, telling what's straight. Gather together and come. Come near, you survivors of the nations. The ones who carry round a block of wood and pray to a god that can't save don't know anything. Tell it out and bring it forward. Let them talk it over together. Who announced this a long time ago and told it back then? Wasn't it me, the Lord? And there's no God apart from me — a righteous God and a saviour. There's nobody but me. Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth. Because I'm God, and there's nobody else. I've sworn by myself. A word has gone out of my mouth in righteousness and it won't be taken back: to me every knee will bend and every tongue will swear. They'll say of me: Only in the Lord is there righteousness and strength. Everyone who was raging at him will come to him and be ashamed. In the Lord all the offspring of Israel will be put right and will boast.

Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God. Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour. They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols. But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.
