But I'll bring trouble on Ariel, and there'll be mourning and grieving, and she'll be an altar hearth to me. I'll camp against you all round. And the crowd of all the nations fighting against Ariel — all of them fighting her and her stronghold and pressing her hard — will be like a dream, a vision in the night. It'll be like a hungry man dreaming he's eating and waking up with nothing in him, or a thirsty man dreaming he's drinking and waking up worn out and still thirsty. That's how it'll be with the crowd of all the nations fighting against Mount Zion. Stop and stare at yourselves. Blind yourselves and go blind. They're drunk, but not on wine. They stagger, but not on strong drink. Because the LORD has poured a deep sleep over you. He's shut your eyes — the prophets — and covered your heads — the seers. The whole vision has become to you like the words of a sealed book. Men give it to someone who can read and say, ‘Please read this,’ and he says, ‘I can't, because it's sealed.’ Then the book is given to someone who cannot read, saying, ‘Please read this,’ and he says, ‘I cannot read.’

The wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the understanding of their sensible men will be hidden.’ Trouble is coming to those who dig deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, whose works are in the dark, and who say, ‘Who sees us? Who knows us?’ Surely your turning things upside down will be counted as the potter's clay. Will the thing made say of its maker, ‘He didn't make me’? Or will the thing formed say of the one who formed it, ‘He has no understanding’ ?
So the Lord says: Because this people comes near me with their mouth and honours me with their lips, and their heart is a long way off from me, and their fear of me is a rule taught by men — look, I'll go on doing an astonishing thing with this people, astonishing and amazing. For the terrible one is brought to nothing, the scorner is consumed, and all who watch for wrongdoing are cut off. Those who make a man out to be guilty with a word, who lay traps for the man defending his case at the gate, who push aside the one in the right for nothing. So this is what the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, says about the house of Jacob: Jacob won't be ashamed now, and his face won't go pale.
