A stronghold for the poor

O LORD, you are my God. I will exalt you and praise your name, because you have done wonderful things; your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. For you have made a city into a heap, a fortified city into a ruin, and a palace of strangers into no city at all. It will never be rebuilt. So a strong people will give you glory, and the city of ruthless nations will fear you. You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm and a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is like a storm against the wall. As heat in a dry place, you will bring down the noise of strangers. As heat by the shadow of a cloud, the branch of the terrible ones will be brought low.

Lord, you're my God. I'll lift you high and thank your name, because you've done wonderful things — plans made long ago, carried out faithfully and true. You've turned a city into a heap of rubble, a fortified town into a ruin. The stronghold of foreigners is a city no more, and it'll never be rebuilt. So a strong people will give you glory, and the town of ruthless nations will fear you. Because you've been a stronghold for the poor, a stronghold for the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and shade from the heat. Because the blast of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall, like heat in a dry place. You bring down the racket of foreigners. Like heat under the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is brought down.

O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. For thou hast made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built. Therefore shall the strong people glorify thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee. For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

The feast and the end of death

On this mountain the LORD Almighty will make for all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees — fat things full of marrow and wines on the lees well refined. On this mountain he will destroy the covering cast over all people and the veil spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory. The Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and he will take away the rebuke of his people from all the earth, because the LORD has spoken it. In that day it will be said, ‘this is our God. We have waited for him, and he will save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him. We will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.’ Because the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain. And Moab will be trodden down where he stands, the way straw is trodden into a dung heap. He'll spread his hands out in it the way a swimmer spreads his hands to swim. And God will bring down his pride, along with all the tricks of his hands. He'll bring down your high fortified walls, lay them low, bring them to the ground, right into the dust.

And on this mountain the Lord Almighty will put on a feast for all the peoples — a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, the best of the meat and the finest of the wine. And on this mountain he'll swallow up the covering that's over all the peoples, the veil spread over all the nations. He'll swallow up death forever, and the Lord God will wipe the tears off every face and take away the shame of his people from all the earth. Because the Lord has spoken. And on that day it'll be said: Look — this is our God. We waited for him and he saved us. This is the Lord. We waited for him. Let's celebrate and be glad in his salvation. Because the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain.

And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest, and Moab shall be trodden down under him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill. And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.
