The earthly holy place
Now the first covenant did have regulations for worship, and an earthly sanctuary. A tent was set up. In the first part were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence, and this is called the Holy Place. And behind the second veil was the part of the tent called the Most Holy Place, which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant covered all over with gold. In it were the golden pot of manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant. And above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the ark's cover. But we can't go into detail about all this now. With everything arranged like that, the priests went into the first part of the tent all the time, carrying out the service of God. But only the high priest went into the second part, and only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place hadn't yet been opened while the first tent was still standing. That was a picture for the present time, in which gifts and sacrifices are offered that can't make the worshipper complete as far as his conscience is concerned. They deal only with food and drink and various washings, outward regulations imposed until the time of setting things right.
Then truly the first covenant had rules of service too and a worldly holy place. Because there was a tent made — the first, where the lampstand was and the table and the bread of the Presence, which is called the holy place. And after the second curtain, the tent called the holiest of all. Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant covered all round with gold, where was the golden pot with manna and Aaron's rod that budded and the tablets of the covenant. And over it the cherubim of glory shadowing the mercy seat — which we can't now speak of in detail. Now when these things were set out like this, the priests always went into the first tent, carrying out the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, that he offered for himself and for the errors of the people. The Holy Spirit showing this, that the way into the holiest of all wasn't yet made plain, while the first tent was still standing. Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that couldn't make the one who did the service perfect as far as the conscience goes. That stood only in foods and drinks and different washings and fleshly rules, laid on them till the time of setting things right.
Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

A tent was set up. In the first part were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence, and this is called the Holy Place.
Because there was a tent made — the first, where the lampstand was and the table and the bread of the Presence, which is called the holy place.

The blood of Christ
But Christ came as high priest of the good things to come, through a greater and more perfect tent not made with hands — that is, not of this building. He entered the holy place once for all, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, and so obtained eternal redemption for us. Because if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkled on those who are unclean, make them holy so far as the body is concerned, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without fault to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works, so you can serve the living God? And for this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant — so that, since a death has taken place to redeem them from the offences committed under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. Because where there is a will, the death of the one who made it has to be established. A will only takes effect after death. It has no force at all while the one who made it is alive. That is why not even the first covenant was put into effect without blood. When Moses had spoken every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled the book itself and all the people, saying, This is the blood of the covenant God has commanded you to keep. And in the same way he sprinkled the tent and all the vessels used in the service with blood. In fact under the law nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. So it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be cleansed this way, but for the heavenly things themselves to have better sacrifices than these. Because Christ has not entered holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but heaven itself, to appear now in the presence of God for us. And he doesn't offer himself over and over, the way the high priest goes into the holy place every year with blood that isn't his own. Otherwise he would have had to suffer many times since the foundation of the world. But now, once at the end of the world, he has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. And to those who look for him he will appear a second time, without sin, to salvation.
But Christ being come a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building. Not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he went in once into the holy place, having got everlasting buying back for us. Because if the blood of bulls and of goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean makes them holy to the cleaning of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the everlasting Spirit offered himself without spot to God, clean your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this reason he's the go-between of the new covenant — so that by means of death, for the buying back of what was broken under the first covenant, the ones who are called could get the promise of everlasting inheritance. Because where a will is, there has to be of need the death of the one who made it too. Because a will is in force after men are dead. Otherwise it's of no strength at all while the one who made it lives. So not even the first covenant was set up without blood. Because when Moses had spoken every rule to all the people according to the teaching, he took the blood of calves and of goats with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book and all the people. Saying: This is the blood of the covenant that God has ordered you. What's more he sprinkled with blood both the tent and all the vessels of the service. And almost everything is by the teaching cleaned with blood. And without spilling of blood there's no forgiveness. So it was needful that the patterns of things in the heavens should be cleaned with these. But the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Because Christ hasn't gone into the holy places made with hands, that are the figures of the true, but into heaven itself, now to show himself in the presence of God for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
