The rest that stays

So let us fear, in case, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, any of you should seem to fall short of it. Because the good news was preached to us just as it was to them. But the word they heard did them no good, because it wasn't mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, just as he said, So I swore in my anger, They will never enter my rest — even though his works were finished from the foundation of the world. Because somewhere he spoke about the seventh day like this: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, They will never enter my rest. So since it remains for some to enter it, and those who first heard the good news didn't get in because of unbelief, he again marks out a certain day — Today — saying through David, so long afterwards, as it has been said before: Today, if you will hear his voice, don't harden your hearts. Because if Jesus had given them rest, he wouldn't have spoken later about another day. So there remains a rest for the people of God. Because anyone who has entered his rest has himself rested from his own works, just as God did from his. So let us make every effort to enter that rest, so nobody falls by following the same example of unbelief.

So let's fear, in case a promise being left us of going into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. Because to us the good news was preached too, the way it was to them. But the word preached didn't profit them, not being mixed with faith in the ones who heard it. Because we who've believed do go into rest, the way he said: As I've sworn in my anger, they won't go into my rest — though the works were finished from the foundation of the world. Because he spoke in a certain place of the seventh day like this: And God rested the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again: They won't go into my rest. Seeing then it stays that some have to go into it, and the ones it was first preached to didn't go in because of unbelief, again he marks out a certain day, saying in David: Today — after so long a time. As it's said: Today, if you'll hear his voice, don't harden your hearts. Because if Joshua had given them rest, then he wouldn't afterwards have spoken of another day. So there stays a rest for the people of God. Because the one who's gone into his rest has rested too from his own works, the way God did from his. So let's work to go into that rest, in case any man falls after the same example of unbelief.

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

1

So let us fear, in case, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, any of you should seem to fall short of it.

Plain English

So let's fear, in case a promise being left us of going into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

King James Version, 1611

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2

Because the good news was preached to us just as it was to them. But the word they heard did them no good, because it wasn't mixed with faith in those who heard it.

Plain English

Because to us the good news was preached too, the way it was to them. But the word preached didn't profit them, not being mixed with faith in the ones who heard it.

King James Version, 1611

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

3

For we who have believed do enter that rest, just as he said, So I swore in my anger, They will never enter my rest — even though his works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Plain English

Because we who've believed do go into rest, the way he said: As I've sworn in my anger, they won't go into my rest — though the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

King James Version, 1611

For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4

Because somewhere he spoke about the seventh day like this: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.

And in this place again, They will never enter my rest.

Plain English

And in this place again: They won't go into my rest.

King James Version, 1611

And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

6

So since it remains for some to enter it, and those who first heard the good news didn't get in because of unbelief,

Seeing then it stays that some have to go into it, and the ones it was first preached to didn't go in because of unbelief,

King James Version, 1611

Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

King James Version, 1611

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8

Because if Jesus had given them rest, he wouldn't have spoken later about another day.

Plain English

Because if Joshua had given them rest, then he wouldn't afterwards have spoken of another day.

King James Version, 1611

For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9

So there remains a rest for the people of God.

Plain English

So there stays a rest for the people of God.

King James Version, 1611

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10

Because anyone who has entered his rest has himself rested from his own works, just as God did from his.

Plain English

Because the one who's gone into his rest has rested too from his own works, the way God did from his.

King James Version, 1611

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11

So let us make every effort to enter that rest, so nobody falls by following the same example of unbelief.

Plain English

So let's work to go into that rest, in case any man falls after the same example of unbelief.

King James Version, 1611

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

The word of God is alive

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It cuts right through, dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and it judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And nothing in creation is hidden from his sight. Everything is naked and laid open before the eyes of the one we have to answer to. So then, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens — Jesus, the Son of God — let us hold firmly to what we confess. Because we don't have a high priest who can't sympathise with our weaknesses. He was tempted in every way, just as we are, and yet without sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of grace, so we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Because the word of God is alive and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing right to the dividing of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow, and knows the thoughts and purposes of the heart. And there isn't any creature that isn't plain in his sight. But everything is naked and open to the eyes of the one we have to deal with. Seeing then that we've got a great high priest who's gone into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let's hold fast what we own up to. Because we haven't got a high priest who can't be touched with the feeling of our weaknesses. But he was in all points tested the way we are, yet without sin. So let's come boldly to the throne of grace, so we can get mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

12

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It cuts right through, dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and it judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

King James Version, 1611

Plain English

So let's come boldly to the throne of grace, so we can get mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

King James Version, 1611

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
