Before Pharaoh
Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh: My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they've got, have come out of the land of Canaan. And they're in the land of Goshen now. And he took five of his brothers and brought them in to Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said to his brothers: What's your line of work? And they said to Pharaoh: Your servants run stock, us and our fathers before us. And they said to Pharaoh: We've come to stop in the country a while, because there's no feed left for your servants' flocks. The famine has a grip on the land of Canaan. So let your servants settle in the land of Goshen. And Pharaoh said to Joseph: Your father and your brothers have come to you. The land of Egypt is before you. Settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land — let them live in Goshen. And if you know any capable men among them, put them in charge of my cattle. And Joseph brought Jacob his father in and stood him in front of Pharaoh. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said to Jacob: How old are you? And Jacob said to Pharaoh: I've been a hundred and thirty years on the road. They've been few and they've been hard, and they don't come up to the years my fathers had on their own road. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from him. And Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a holding in the land of Egypt, on the best of the country, in the land of Rameses, the way Pharaoh had ordered. And Joseph kept his father and his brothers and his father's whole household in bread, according to their families.

And when the money ran out in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said: Give us bread. Why should we die in front of you? The money's gone. And Joseph said: Bring your stock. I'll give you bread for your stock, if the money's gone. And they brought their stock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange — for horses, for flocks, for herds, for donkeys. He carried them in bread that year for the whole of their stock. And when that year was out, they came to him the second year and said: We won't hide it from my lord. The money's spent, and my lord has our stock. There's nothing left in front of my lord but our own bodies and our land. Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. Give us seed, so we may live and not die, and the land may not become desolate. And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, because every Egyptian sold his field, the famine being so severe. So the land became Pharaoh's. And as for the people, he shifted them into the towns, from one end of Egypt to the other. Only the land of the priests he didn't buy, because the priests had an allowance from Pharaoh and lived on what Pharaoh gave them. That's why they didn't sell their land. Then Joseph said to the people: Look — I've bought you today, and your land, for Pharaoh. Here's seed for you. Put in a crop. And when it comes in, you'll give a fifth to Pharaoh. The other four parts are your own, for seed for the paddock and for your food, and for your households and your little ones. And they said: You have saved our lives. If you are pleased with us, my lord, we will be Pharaoh's servants. And Joseph made it the law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh gets the fifth. Only the land of the priests stayed out of Pharaoh's hands.
