Isaac in Gerar
And there was a famine in the land, on top of the one back in Abraham's day. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines at Gerar. And the Lord appeared to him and said: Don't go down to Egypt. Stop in the country I tell you. Stay put in this land, and I'll be with you and bless you. Because I'll give all these countries to you and your offspring, and I'll make good the oath I swore to Abraham your father. And after he'd been there a good while, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out a window and saw Isaac carrying on with Rebekah his wife. And Abimelech called Isaac in and said: She's your wife, for certain. What did you tell me she was your sister for? And Isaac said: Because I reckoned I'd be killed over her. And Abimelech said: What's this you've done to us? One of the men could easily have been with your wife, and you'd have brought the guilt of it down on us. And Abimelech gave the order to all his people: Anyone who lays a hand on this man or his wife is a dead man. Then Isaac put a crop in that country, and that same year he got it back a hundredfold. And the Lord blessed him. And the man became great, and kept growing greater until he was very great. He had flocks and herds and a lot of hands working for him. And the Philistines were filthy about it. Because all the wells his father's men had dug back in Abraham's day, the Philistines had stopped up and filled in with dirt. And Abimelech said to Isaac: Move on. You've got too big for us. So Isaac cleared out and camped in the valley of Gerar and settled there.

And the Lord appeared to him that same night and said: I'm the God of Abraham your father. Don't be frightened. I'm with you, and I'll bless you and multiply your offspring, for my servant Abraham's sake. And he built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there. And Isaac's men sank a well there.

And that same day Isaac's men came and told him about the well they'd dug: We've struck water. And he called it Shebah. That's why the town is called Beersheba to this day. And Esau was forty when he took Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite for a wife, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. And the two of them caused Isaac and Rebekah deep grief.

And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water. And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day. And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
