The burning bush
Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared: the bush was blazing away, but it wasn't being consumed. Moses said to himself, 'I've got to go over and have a look at this. Why isn't that bush burning up?' When the Lord saw that Moses had turned aside to look, God called to him from the bush: 'Moses! Moses!' He answered, 'Here I am.' God said, 'Don't come any closer. Take your sandals off, because the ground you're standing on is holy.' Then he said, 'I am the God of your father — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.' Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, 'I have surely seen the suffering of my people in Egypt. I've heard their cry because of their taskmasters, and I know their sorrows.' 'I've come down to deliver them from the Egyptians and bring them out of that land into a good, broad land — a land flowing with milk and honey, where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites live.' 'The cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I've seen how brutally the Egyptians are oppressing them.' 'So now, off you go. I'm sending you to Pharaoh so you can bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.'

And Moses said: I'll turn aside now and see this great sight, why the bush isn't burnt up. And when the Lord saw he turned aside to look, God called to him out of the middle of the bush and said: Moses, Moses. And he said: Here I am. And he said: Don't come any closer. Take your sandals off your feet, because the place you're standing on is holy ground. And he said: I'm the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, because he was frightened to look at God. And the Lord said: I've definitely seen the trouble of my people in Egypt, and I've heard their cry because of their taskmasters. Because I know their sorrows. And I've come down to rescue them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey — to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. So now, look — the cry of the people of Israel has come to me. And I've seen the crushing that the Egyptians crush them with. So come now, and I'll send you to Pharaoh, so you can bring my people, the people of Israel, out of Egypt.

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
Moses said to himself, 'I've got to go over and have a look at this. Why isn't that bush burning up?'
And Moses said: I'll turn aside now and see this great sight, why the bush isn't burnt up.
And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
When the Lord saw that Moses had turned aside to look, God called to him from the bush: 'Moses! Moses!' He answered, 'Here I am.'
And when the Lord saw he turned aside to look, God called to him out of the middle of the bush and said: Moses, Moses. And he said: Here I am.
And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
God said, 'Don't come any closer. Take your sandals off, because the ground you're standing on is holy.'
And he said: Don't come any closer. Take your sandals off your feet, because the place you're standing on is holy ground.
And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
Then he said, 'I am the God of your father — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.' Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.
And he said: I'm the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, because he was frightened to look at God.
Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
The Lord said, 'I have surely seen the suffering of my people in Egypt. I've heard their cry because of their taskmasters, and I know their sorrows.'
And the Lord said: I've definitely seen the trouble of my people in Egypt, and I've heard their cry because of their taskmasters. Because I know their sorrows.
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
'I've come down to deliver them from the Egyptians and bring them out of that land into a good, broad land — a land flowing with milk and honey, where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites live.'
And I've come down to rescue them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey — to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.
And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
'The cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I've seen how brutally the Egyptians are oppressing them.'
So now, look — the cry of the people of Israel has come to me. And I've seen the crushing that the Egyptians crush them with.
Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.
'So now, off you go. I'm sending you to Pharaoh so you can bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.'
So come now, and I'll send you to Pharaoh, so you can bring my people, the people of Israel, out of Egypt.
Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
I AM THAT I AM
Moses said to God, 'Who am I to go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?' God answered, 'I will certainly be with you. And this will be the sign that I sent you: after you bring the people out of Egypt, you'll serve God on this mountain.' Moses said, 'Suppose I go to the Israelites and tell them, “The God of your fathers has sent me,” and they ask, “What's his name?” What do I tell them?' God said to Moses, 'I AM THAT I AM.' Then he said, 'Tell the Israelites this: I AM has sent me to you.' God continued, 'Tell the Israelites: The Lord God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered through every generation.' 'Go and gather the elders of Israel. Tell them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, appeared to me and said, “I have surely visited you and seen what is being done to you in Egypt.”' 'And I have promised to bring you out of Egypt's suffering into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites — a land flowing with milk and honey.' 'They'll listen to you. Then you and the elders of Israel must go to the king of Egypt and say, “The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us travel three days into the wilderness to sacrifice to the Lord our God.”' 'I know the king of Egypt won't let you go unless he's forced by a mighty hand.' 'So I'll stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all the wonders I'll perform there. After that, he'll let you go.' 'I'll give this people favour in the eyes of the Egyptians, and when you leave, you won't leave empty-handed.' 'Every woman will ask her neighbour, and any woman staying in her house, for silver, gold and clothing. Put them on your sons and daughters. In this way you'll strip the Egyptians of their wealth.'
And Moses said to God: Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the people of Israel out of Egypt? And he said: I'll definitely be with you. And this will be the sign to you that I've sent you: when you've brought the people out of Egypt, you'll serve God on this mountain. And Moses said to God: Look — when I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What's his name? — what'll I say to them? And God said to Moses: I AM THAT I AM. And he said: This is what you'll say to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you. And God said to Moses again: This is what you'll say to the people of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I'm to be remembered through all generations. Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob, has shown himself to me: I've definitely looked at you and at what's been done to you in Egypt. And I've said: I'll bring you up out of the trouble of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey. And they'll listen to your voice. And you'll come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt and say to him: The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us. So now let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, please, so we can sacrifice to the Lord our God. And I'm sure the king of Egypt won't let you go, no, not by a strong hand. And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand. And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go. And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty: But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.
Moses said to God, 'Who am I to go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'
And Moses said to God: Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the people of Israel out of Egypt?
And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?
God answered, 'I will certainly be with you. And this will be the sign that I sent you: after you bring the people out of Egypt, you'll serve God on this mountain.'
And he said: I'll definitely be with you. And this will be the sign to you that I've sent you: when you've brought the people out of Egypt, you'll serve God on this mountain.
And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
Moses said, 'Suppose I go to the Israelites and tell them, “The God of your fathers has sent me,” and they ask, “What's his name?” What do I tell them?'
And Moses said to God: Look — when I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What's his name? — what'll I say to them?
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
God said to Moses, 'I AM THAT I AM.' Then he said, 'Tell the Israelites this: I AM has sent me to you.'
And God said to Moses: I AM THAT I AM. And he said: This is what you'll say to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
God continued, 'Tell the Israelites: The Lord God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered through every generation.'
And God said to Moses again: This is what you'll say to the people of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I'm to be remembered through all generations.
And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
'Go and gather the elders of Israel. Tell them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, appeared to me and said, “I have surely visited you and seen what is being done to you in Egypt.”'
Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob, has shown himself to me: I've definitely looked at you and at what's been done to you in Egypt.
Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:

And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.
'They'll listen to you. Then you and the elders of Israel must go to the king of Egypt and say, “The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us travel three days into the wilderness to sacrifice to the Lord our God.”'
And they'll listen to your voice. And you'll come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt and say to him: The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us. So now let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, please, so we can sacrifice to the Lord our God.
And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.
'I know the king of Egypt won't let you go unless he's forced by a mighty hand.'
And I'm sure the king of Egypt won't let you go, no, not by a strong hand.
And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.
'So I'll stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all the wonders I'll perform there. After that, he'll let you go.'
And I'll stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders that I'll do in the middle of it. And after that he'll let you go.
And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.
'I'll give this people favour in the eyes of the Egyptians, and when you leave, you won't leave empty-handed.'
And I'll give this people favour in the eyes of the Egyptians. And it'll be that when you go, you won't go empty-handed.
And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty:
'Every woman will ask her neighbour, and any woman staying in her house, for silver, gold and clothing. Put them on your sons and daughters. In this way you'll strip the Egyptians of their wealth.'
But every woman will ask her neighbour and the woman staying in her house for jewels of silver and jewels of gold and clothing. And you'll put them on your sons and on your daughters. And you'll strip the Egyptians.
But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.
