Trapped at the sea
The Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to the Israelites, that they turn and camp in front of Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, opposite Baal Zephon. You'll camp in front of it by the sea. Because Pharaoh will say about the Israelites: They're wandering about in the land. The wilderness has shut them in. I'll harden Pharaoh's heart, so he'll chase them. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he chased after the Israelites. And the Israelites went out with a high hand. But the Egyptians chased after them — all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen and his army — and caught up with them camping by the sea, beside Pi Hahiroth, in front of Baal Zephon. As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, 'What, were there no graves in Egypt? Is that why you dragged us out here to die in the wilderness? What have you done bringing us out of Egypt?' 'Didn't we tell you back in Egypt, “Leave us alone so we can serve the Egyptians”? We'd rather serve Egypt than die out here.' Moses told the people, 'Don't be afraid. Stand firm and watch the Lord deliver you today. The Egyptians you see today, you'll never see again.' 'The Lord will fight for you. You just hold your peace.'

And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

Moses told the people, 'Don't be afraid. Stand firm and watch the Lord deliver you today. The Egyptians you see today, you'll never see again.'

The Lord said to Moses, 'Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move forward.' 'Lift your staff, stretch your hand over the sea and divide it. The Israelites will go through the middle of the sea on dry land.' And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so they follow them. I will gain honour over Pharaoh, all his army, his chariots and his horsemen. The Egyptians will know I'm the Lord, when I've been given honour through Pharaoh, through his chariots and through his horsemen. The angel of God, who went ahead of the camp of Israel, shifted and went behind them. And the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. It came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. And it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these. So one didn't come near the other all night. Moses stretched his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back all night with a strong east wind, turned the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. The Israelites went into the middle of the sea on dry ground, with the waters like a wall on their right and left. The Egyptians chased and went after them into the middle of the sea — all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots and his horsemen. And in the morning watch the Lord looked at the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and threw the army of the Egyptians into a panic. He took off their chariot wheels so they drove with difficulty. The Egyptians said, 'Let's get out of here! The Lord is fighting for Israel against Egypt.' The Lord said to Moses: Stretch out your hand over the sea, so the waters return on the Egyptians, on their chariots and on their horsemen. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning came. And the Egyptians ran into it. And the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots, horsemen and Pharaoh's entire army that had followed Israel into the sea. Not one of them remained. But the Israelites walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. So the Lord saved Israel that day from the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great work the Lord had done against Egypt. The people feared the Lord and believed the Lord and his servant Moses.

Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.
