Esther before the king
Now on the third day, Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king's house, facing the king's hall. And the king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance. And when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she won his favour, and he held out to her the golden royal staff in his hand. So Esther came near and touched the top of the royal staff. Then the king said to her, What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? It will be given to you, even to half the kingdom. And Esther answered, If it please the king, let the king and Haman come today to a banquet I have prepared for him. Then the king said, Tell Haman to hurry, so we can do as Esther says. So the king and Haman came to the banquet Esther had prepared. And over the wine the king said to Esther, What is your petition? It will be granted. And what is your request? Even to half the kingdom, it will be done. And Esther answered: My petition and my request is this — if the king is pleased with me, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and do what I ask, let the king and Haman come to the banquet I will prepare for them tomorrow. And tomorrow I will do as the king has said.

Haman builds the gallows
So Haman went out that day happy and in good spirits. But when he saw Mordecai at the king's gate, and Mordecai didn't stand up or move for him, Haman was filled with rage against him. Still Haman restrained himself. He went home and sent for his friends and Zeresh his wife. And Haman told them all about the glory of his riches, the multitude of his children, and every way the king had promoted him and raised him above the officials and the king's servants. And Haman said, What is more, Queen Esther let nobody but me come in with the king to the banquet she had prepared. And tomorrow I am invited to banquet with her again, along with the king. But none of this is worth a thing to me, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate. Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to him, Have a gallows built, fifty cubits high, and in the morning ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go in with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself. Haman liked the idea, and he had the gallows built.
Then Haman went out that day glad and with a merry heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he didn't stand up or move for him, he was full of anger against Mordecai. But Haman held himself in. And when he came home, he sent and called for his mates and Zeresh his wife. And Haman told them about the glory of his riches and the number of his children, and everything the king had made him great in, and how he'd lifted him up above the officials and servants of the king. Haman said too: Yes, Queen Esther didn't let any man come in with the king to the banquet she'd got ready except me. And tomorrow I'm asked to her too with the king. But all this is worth nothing to me, all the while I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate. Then Zeresh his wife and all his mates said to him: Let a gallows be made fifty cubits high, and tomorrow speak to the king so Mordecai can be hanged on it. Then go in merrily with the king to the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman, and he had the gallows made.
