Mordecai mourns
When Mordecai found out everything that had been done, he tore his clothes and put on coarse mourning cloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the city crying out loudly and bitterly. He came as far as the king's gate, because nobody was allowed through the king's gate in coarse mourning cloth. And in every province, wherever the king's command and order arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting and weeping and wailing, and many of them lay in coarse mourning cloth and ashes. So Esther's maids and her officials came and told her, and the queen was in great distress. She sent clothes for Mordecai to put on instead of his coarse mourning cloth, but he wouldn't take them. Then Esther called for Hatach, one of the king's officials who had been appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai and find out what this was about and why. So Hatach went out to Mordecai, to the street of the city in front of the king's gate. And Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, and the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the king's treasury for the destruction of the Jews. He also gave him a copy of the written order issued at Shushan for their destruction, to show Esther and explain it to her, and to charge her to go in to the king, plead with him and make request for her people. And Hatach came back and told Esther what Mordecai had said. Then Esther spoke to Hatach again and gave him a message for Mordecai: All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that for any man or woman who goes in to the king in the inner court without being called, there is one law: they are to be put to death — unless the king holds out the golden royal staff to them, and they live. And I haven't been called to come in to the king for thirty days.

And they told Mordecai what Esther had said. Then Mordecai sent this answer back to Esther: Don't imagine that you of all the Jews will escape, just because you are in the king's house. Because if you keep quiet at this time, relief and rescue will come to the Jews from somewhere else — but you and your father's house will be destroyed. And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Then Esther sent this answer back to Mordecai: Go and gather all the Jews present in Shushan, and fast for me. Don't eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish. So Mordecai went away and did everything Esther had told him.

Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer, Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish. So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
