One body, one Spirit

So I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you were called to, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, putting up with one another in love, doing your best to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling — one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in you all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. That is why it says: When he went up on high, he led captivity captive and gave gifts to men. Now that he ascended, what does that mean except that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? The one who went down is the same one who went up far above all the heavens, so he might fill everything.) And he gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ, until we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. Then we won't be children any more, thrown about and carried along by every wind of teaching, by men's trickery and their cunning in scheming to deceive. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow up in every way into him who is the head, that is Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting joint, grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work.

So I, the prisoner of the Lord, beg you that you walk worthy of the calling you're called with. With all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, putting up with each other in love. Trying hard to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There's one body and one Spirit, the way you're called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, who's above all and through all and in you all. But to every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. So he says: When he went up on high, he led captivity captive and gave gifts to men. (Now that he went up, what is it but that he went down first into the lower parts of the earth? The one who went down is the same one who went up far above all heavens, so he could fill everything.) And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some preachers, and some pastors and teachers. To make the holy ones ready, for the work of serving, for the building up of the body of Christ. Till we all come in the oneness of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a grown man, to the measure of the full size of Christ. So from now on we shouldn't be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of teaching, by the trickery of men and cunning craftiness where they lie in wait to take in. But speaking the truth in love, we can grow up into him in everything, who is the head, Christ. From him the whole body fitted together and joined by every joint that supplies, according to the working in the measure of every part, makes the body grow to the building up of itself in love.

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

The new man

So this I say, and insist on in the Lord: don't go on walking as the other Gentiles walk, in the emptiness of their minds. Their understanding is darkened. They are shut out from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their hearts. Having lost all feeling, they have handed themselves over to indecency, greedy for every kind of impurity. But that isn't how you learned Christ, if in fact you have heard him and been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you should put off the old self, which belongs to your old way of life and is being ruined by deceitful cravings, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, created after God in righteousness and true holiness. So have done with lying. Let everyone speak the truth to his neighbour, because we belong to one another. Be angry, and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on your anger, and don't give the devil a foothold. The man who was stealing should steal no more. Instead, let him work honestly with his own hands, so he has something to give to anyone in need. Don't let any rotten talk come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building people up as the need arises, so it does some good to those who hear it. And don't grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness and rage and anger and shouting and slander, along with every kind of malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.

So this I say and testify in the Lord, that you from now on don't walk the way other nations walk, in the emptiness of their mind. Having their understanding darkened, being strangers from the life of God through the ignorance in them, because of the blindness of their heart. Who being past feeling have given themselves over to loose living, to work all uncleanness with greed. But that's not how you've learned Christ. If it's so that you've heard him and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus. That you put off, about the way you lived before, the old man, that's rotten according to what deceit wants. And be made new in the spirit of your mind. And that you put on the new man, that after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. So put away lying and speak every man truth with his neighbour. Because we're parts of each other. Be angry and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on your anger. And don't give place to the devil. Let the one who stole steal no more. But rather let him work, working with his hands what's good, so he can have something to give to the one who needs. Don't let any rotten talk come out of your mouth, but what's good to build up as needed, so it can give grace to the ones who hear. And don't grieve the Holy Spirit of God, who you're sealed by to the day of buying back. Let all bitterness and rage and anger and shouting and evil speaking be put away from you, with all badness. And be kind to each other, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, the way God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23

and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

And that you put on the new man, that after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
