One thing happens to everyone
So I took all this to heart and worked it out: the righteous and the wise and what they do are in the hand of God. Whether it will be love or hate, no man knows. It all lies ahead of them. Everything comes alike to all. The same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the clean and the unclean, to the one who sacrifices and the one who doesn't. As it is for the good man, so it is for the sinner; as for the one who swears, so for the one who fears an oath. This is an evil among everything done under the sun: the same event happens to all. The hearts of the people are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live — and after that, they go to the dead. For anyone still among the living there is hope, because a live dog is better off than a dead lion. The living know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no more reward, because the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished. They will never again have any share in anything done under the sun. Go your way. Eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a glad heart, because God now accepts your works. Let your clothes always be white, and don't let your head lack oil. Enjoy life with the wife you love, all the days of the fleeting life God has given you under the sun, all your fleeting days. Because that is your lot in life, and in the work you do under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with everything you have got, because there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom in the grave, where you are going.
Because all this I laid to my heart, to make all this clear — that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. No man knows love or hatred by everything in front of them. Everything comes alike to everyone. One thing happens to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the clean and to the unclean, to the one who sacrifices and to the one who doesn't sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner. And the one who swears, as the one who's frightened of an oath. This is an evil among everything done under the sun — that there's one thing that happens to everyone. Yes, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live. And after that they go to the dead. Because for the one who's joined to all the living there's hope. Because a living dog is better than a dead lion. Because the living know they'll die. But the dead don't know anything, and they've got no more reward, because their memory is forgotten. Their love too and their hatred and their envy have gone now. And they've got no share any more forever in anything done under the sun. Go your way, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a glad heart. Because God already accepts your works. Let your clothes be white all the time, and don't let your head go short of oil. Live happily with the wife you love all the days of your empty life that he's given you under the sun, all the days of your emptiness. Because that's your share in this life and in your work that you work at under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your strength. Because there's no work or plan or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you're going.
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them. All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead. For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment. Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Time and chance
I turned and saw under the sun that the race isn't to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the clever, nor favour to men of skill. Time and chance come to them all. And a man doesn't know his own time. Like fish caught in a cruel net, like birds caught in a snare, so the people are trapped by an evil time when it falls on them suddenly. I also saw this example of wisdom under the sun, and it struck me as great: There was a small town with only a few men in it. And a great king came against it, surrounded it and built big siegeworks against it. Now in that town there was a poor wise man, and by his wisdom he saved the town. Yet nobody remembered that poor man. So I said, Wisdom is better than strength. But the poor man's wisdom is looked down on, and nobody listens to what he says. The quiet words of wise men are heard above the shouting of a ruler among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war. But one sinner destroys a great deal of good.
I came back and saw under the sun that the race isn't to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to men of understanding, or favour to men of skill. But time and chance happen to them all. Because man doesn't know his time either. Like fish caught in a bad net, and like birds caught in a snare, that's how the sons of men are trapped in a bad time when it falls suddenly on them. I've seen this wisdom under the sun too, and it seemed great to me. There was a little town with a few men in it. And a great king came against it and surrounded it and built great siege works against it. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he saved the town by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. Then I said: Wisdom is better than strength. But the poor man's wisdom is looked down on, and his words aren't heard. The words of wise men are heard in quiet, more than the shout of the one who rules among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war. But one sinner wrecks plenty of good.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them. This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
