The dream of the tree
Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all peoples, nations and languages living in all the earth: peace be multiplied to you. It seemed good to me to tell you the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me. How great are his signs, and how mighty his wonders. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his rule goes on from generation to generation. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace. I had a dream that frightened me, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions in my head troubled me. So I gave orders to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, to tell me what the dream meant. Then came the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans and soothsayers. I told them the dream, but they did not make its interpretation known to me. At the last Daniel came in before me — the one called Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods — and I told him the dream: Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret is too hard for you. Tell me the visions of my dream and what they mean. These were the visions in my head as I lay on my bed. I looked, and there was a tree in the middle of the earth, and its height was great. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to the sky, and it could be seen to the ends of the earth. Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit plentiful, and there was food on it for everyone. The beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the sky lived in its branches, and everything alive was fed from it. In the visions in my head on my bed I looked, and there was a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven. He called out loudly: Cut the tree down. Lop off its branches. Strip its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals get out from under it and the birds out of its branches. But leave the stump and its roots in the ground, bound with iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be soaked with the dew of heaven, and let his lot be with the animals in the grass of the earth. Let his mind be changed from a man's, and let the mind of an animal be given him, and let seven times pass over him. This sentence is by the order of the watchers, this demand by the word of the holy ones — so the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he chooses, and sets over it the lowliest of men. This is the dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means — because none of the wise men of my kingdom can. But you can, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

Belteshazzar answered, My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you, and its meaning for your enemies. The tree you saw, which grew and became strong, whose top reached to the sky and could be seen over all the earth, whose leaves were beautiful and whose fruit was plentiful, and on which there was food for everyone; under which the beasts of the field lived, and in whose branches the birds of the sky nested — it is you, king. You have grown and become strong. Your greatness has grown and reaches to the sky, and your rule to the ends of the earth. And as the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, Cut the tree down and destroy it, but leave the stump and its roots in the ground, bound with iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field, and let him be soaked with the dew of heaven, and let his lot be with the beasts of the field until seven times pass over him — this is what it means, king, and this is the order of the Most High that has come on my lord the king. You will be driven out from among men, and you will live with the beasts of the field. You will be made to eat grass like cattle, and you will be soaked with the dew of heaven, and seven times will pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whoever he chooses. And as they ordered the stump and roots of the tree to be left, your kingdom will be kept for you from the time you come to know that heaven rules. So king, take my advice: break off your sins by doing what is right, and your wrongdoing by showing mercy to the poor. It may be that your peace will last longer for it.

And where the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, Cut the tree down and wreck it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and its share be with the animals of the field till seven times go past over him — this is what it means, king, and this is the order of the Most High that's come on my lord the king: They'll drive you from men, and you'll live with the animals of the field. And they'll make you eat grass like oxen, and they'll wet you with the dew of heaven. And seven times will go past over you, till you know the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whoever he wants. And where they ordered to leave the stump of the tree's roots — your kingdom will be sure to you after you know that the heavens rule. So, king, let my counsel be acceptable to you. Break off your sins with righteousness, and your wrongdoing by showing mercy to the poor. Maybe your easy time will be made longer.

Driven from men
All of this came on King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon. And the king said, Isn't this great Babylon, that I have built as a royal residence by my own mighty power, and for the honour of my majesty? The words were still in the king's mouth when a voice fell from heaven: King Nebuchadnezzar, this word is for you. The kingdom has gone from you. You will be driven out from among men, and you will live with the beasts of the field. You will be made to eat grass like cattle, and seven times will pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whoever he chooses. That same hour the word came true. Nebuchadnezzar was driven out from among men. He ate grass like cattle, and his body was soaked with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew long like eagles' feathers and his nails like birds' claws. And at the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding came back to me. And I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honoured him who lives forever, whose rule is an everlasting rule, and whose kingdom goes on from generation to generation. All the people of the earth count as nothing before him. He does as he pleases with the army of heaven and with those who live on the earth. And nobody can hold back his hand, or say to him, What are you doing? At the same time my reason came back to me. And for the glory of my kingdom, my honour and splendour came back to me. My counsellors and my nobles came looking for me, and I was restored to my kingdom, and even greater majesty was added to me. So now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and lift up and honour the King of heaven. All his works are true and his ways are just, and he is able to bring down those who walk in pride.
All this came on King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. The king spoke and said: Isn't this great Babylon that I've built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honour of my majesty? While the word was still in the king's mouth, a voice fell from heaven: King Nebuchadnezzar, it's said to you: The kingdom has gone from you. And they'll drive you from men, and you'll live with the animals of the field. They'll make you eat grass like oxen. And seven times will go past over you, till you know the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whoever he wants. That same hour the thing was carried out on Nebuchadnezzar. And he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair had grown like eagles' feathers and his nails like birds' claws. And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes up to heaven, and my understanding came back to me. And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.
