And in the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams that troubled his spirit, and his sleep left him. So the king gave the order to call in the magicians and astrologers and sorcerers and Chaldeans, to tell the king his dreams. And they came and stood before the king. And the king said to them, I have had a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know what it was. Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Syriack: O king, live forever. He said to Arioch the king's officer, Why is the king's order so urgent? Then Arioch explained the matter to Daniel. So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him time, and he would show the king the meaning. Then Daniel went home and told the matter to Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, his companions, so they would ask the God of heaven for mercy about this secret, and Daniel and his companions wouldn't be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision at night. And Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel said: Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, because wisdom and might are his. He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light lives with him. I thank you and praise you, God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and strength, and have now made known to me what we asked of you. You have made known to us the king's matter.

The image and the stone
So Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, Don't destroy the wise men of Babylon. Bring me in before the king, and I will show the king the meaning. Then Arioch brought Daniel in before the king in a hurry and said, I have found a man among the exiles of Judah who will make the meaning known to the king. The king said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Are you able to tell me the dream I saw, and what it means? Daniel answered the king: The secret the king has demanded cannot be shown by wise men, astrologers, magicians or soothsayers. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the last days. Your dream, and the visions in your head as you lay on your bed, were these. As for you, king, your thoughts came to you on your bed about what would happen after this. And the one who reveals secrets has made known to you what is going to happen. As for me, this secret hasn't been revealed to me because I have more wisdom than anyone alive, but so the meaning can be made known to the king, and so you may know the thoughts of your own heart. You, king, were looking, and there stood a great statue. This statue was huge, and its brightness was extraordinary. It stood in front of you, and it was terrible to look at. The head of the statue was fine gold, its chest and arms silver, its belly and thighs bronze, its legs iron, and its feet partly iron and partly clay. You watched until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them to pieces. Then the iron and the clay and the bronze and the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces together, and they became like chaff on a summer threshing floor, and the wind carried them off so there was no trace of them left. And the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. That was the dream. Now we will tell the king what it means. You, king, are a king of kings, because the God of heaven has given you a kingdom and power and strength and glory. And wherever men live, he has given the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky into your hand and made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold. And after you another kingdom will rise, lesser than yours. And after that a third kingdom, of bronze, which will rule over all the earth. And a fourth kingdom will be as strong as iron. Just as iron breaks and smashes everything, so it will break and crush all the rest. And as you saw the feet and toes partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, that kingdom will be divided. But there will be some of the strength of iron in it, since you saw the iron mixed with the wet clay. And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. And as you saw iron mixed with muddy clay, they will mix themselves with the seed of men, but they will not stick to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, and it won't be left to another people. It will break all these kingdoms in pieces and put an end to them, and it will stand forever. Just as you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke the iron and the bronze and the clay and the silver and the gold to pieces — the great God has made known to the king what will happen after this. The dream is certain, and its meaning sure.
So Daniel went in to Arioch, who the king had set up to wreck the wise men of Babylon. He went and said this to him: Don't wreck the wise men of Babylon. Bring me in in front of the king, and I'll show the king what it means. But as for me, this secret isn't uncovered to me for any wisdom I've got more than anyone alive, but so what it means can be made known to the king, and so you'd know what your heart was thinking. You, king, were looking, and there was a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood in front of you, and the look of it was terrifying. This image's head was of fine gold, its chest and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay. You were looking till a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay and broke them to pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were broken to pieces together and turned into chaff off the summer threshing floors. And the wind carried them off so no place was found for them. And the stone that struck the image turned into a great mountain and filled the whole earth. This is the dream. And we'll tell what it means in front of the king. You, king, are a king of kings. Because the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength and glory. And wherever the sons of men live, he's handed over the animals of the field and the birds of the sky into your hand, and made you rule over them all. You're this head of gold. And after you another kingdom will get up, lower than yours, and another third kingdom of bronze that'll rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom will be strong as iron. Because iron breaks in pieces and beats down everything. And like iron that smashes all these, it'll break in pieces and crush. And where you saw the feet and toes part of potter's clay and part of iron, the kingdom will be divided. But there'll be some of the strength of the iron in it, seeing you saw the iron mixed with muddy clay. It'll break all these kingdoms in pieces and finish them, and it'll stand forever. Where you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold — the great God has made known to the king what'll happen after this. And the dream is sure, and what it means is faithful.
Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation. Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation. The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof? Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these; As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass. But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart. Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
