Kings of the south and the north
And I, in the first year of Darius the Mede, stood up to support and strengthen him. Now I will show you the truth. Look — three more kings will stand up in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than them all. By his strength through his riches he will stir up everyone against the realm of Grecia. And a mighty king will rise, who will rule with great authority and do as he pleases. And when he has risen, his kingdom will be broken up and divided toward the four winds of heaven — but not to his own descendants, and not with the authority he ruled with. Because his kingdom will be uprooted and given to others besides them. And the king of the south will be strong, and one of his commanders will become stronger than he is, and will rule, and his rule will be a great one. And after some years they will make an alliance. The daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make an agreement. But she won't keep the power of her arm, and he won't stand, or his arm either. She will be given up, along with those who brought her, and the one who fathered her, and the one who supported her in those times. But out of a shoot from her roots one will rise in his place. He will come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the north, and deal with them, and win. He will also carry captive into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and their precious vessels of silver and gold. He will continue more years than the king of the north. So the king of the south will come into his kingdom and go back to his own land. But his sons will stir themselves up and gather a great army. And one will certainly come and sweep on and pass through. Then he will come back, and carry the fight right up to his fortress. The king of the south will be moved with anger and will come out and fight with him, with the king of the north. He will set out a great multitude, but the multitude will be given into his hand. And when the army is taken away, his heart will be lifted up. He will bring down tens of thousands, but he won't be strengthened by it. The king of the north will return and set out a multitude greater than the former, and after certain years he will surely come with a great army and much riches. And in those times many will rise against the king of the south. And violent men among your own people will lift themselves up to fulfil the vision — and they will fall. So the king of the north will come and throw up a siege ramp and take the best fortified cities. And the forces of the south won't hold, not even their best troops, and there will be no strength to hold out. But the one who comes against him will do as he pleases, and nobody will stand before him. He will stand in the glorious land, and it will be consumed by his hand. He will turn his attention to invading with the strength of his whole kingdom, with upright ones alongside him; and that is what he will do. He will give him the daughter of women to corrupt her, but she will not stand on his side or be for him. After that he will turn his face to the coastlands and take many of them. But a commander will put an end to his insolence, and turn it back on him instead. Then he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land. But he will stumble and fall, and won't be found. Then one will stand up in his place who sends a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom. But within a few days he will be destroyed, neither in anger nor in battle.

And in those times plenty will stand up against the king of the south. And the violent men of your people will lift themselves up to set up the vision, but they'll fall. So the king of the north will come and throw up a ramp and take the fortified towns. And the arms of the south won't hold out, or his chosen people, because there'll be no strength to hold out. But the one who comes against him will do what he wants, and nobody will stand in front of him. And he'll stand in the good land, which will be finished by his hand. He'll set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and straight ones with him. That's what he'll do. And he'll give him the daughter of women, to wreck her. But she won't stand on his side or be for him. After this he'll turn his face to the islands and take plenty. But a captain will make the insult he offered stop for himself. And in his place a contemptible man will rise, who wasn't given the honour of the kingdom. He will come in quietly and take the kingdom by flattery. And armies will be swept away before him like a flood and broken, and the prince of the covenant with them. And after an alliance is made with him, he will work deceitfully. He will come up and grow strong with only a few people. He will come in quietly, even into the richest parts of the province, and do what his fathers and his fathers' fathers never did. He will scatter plunder and loot and wealth among them, and he will plot against strongholds — but only for a time. And he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army. And the king of the south will be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army, but he won't stand, because they will plot against him. The very men who eat at his table will destroy him. His army will be swept away, and many will fall down killed. And both these kings will have their hearts set on doing harm. They will sit at one table and tell lies to each other. But it won't succeed, because the end is still to come at the appointed time. Then he will go back to his own land with great wealth. And his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will act, and go back to his own land. At the time appointed he will return and come toward the south, but it will not be as the former time or as the latter. The ships of Chittim will come against him, so he will be grieved and return, and have anger against the holy covenant. He will return and have intelligence with those who abandon the holy covenant. And forces will be raised by him, and they will defile the sanctuary fortress and put a stop to the daily sacrifice, and set up the disgusting thing that brings desolation. And those who act wickedly against the covenant he will corrupt with flatteries. But the people who know their God will be strong and do exploits. And those among the people who have understanding will teach many. Yet for many days they will fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder. Now when they fall, they will be helped with a little help, but many will join them with flattering words. And some of those who understand will fall, so they can be tested and purged and made white, until the time of the end. Because it is still for the appointed time. And the king will do as he pleases. He will lift himself up and magnify himself above every god, and speak astonishing things against the God of gods. And he will do well until the anger is finished, because what is decreed will be done. He will not regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god, because he will magnify himself above all. But in his estate he will honour the God of forces, and a god whom his fathers did not know he will honour with gold, silver, precious stones and pleasant things. Thus he will act in the strongest holds with a strange god, whom he will acknowledge and increase with glory. He will cause them to rule over many and will divide the land for gain. And at the time of the end the king of the south will push at him. And the king of the north will come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen and many ships. He will enter the countries and sweep through and pass on. He will enter the glorious land too, and many countries will be overthrown. But these will escape out of his hand: Edom, Moab and the chief part of the Ammonites. He will stretch out his hand over the countries, and the land of Egypt won't escape. He will have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt. And the Libyans and the Ethiopians will follow at his heels. But news out of the east and the north will trouble him. So he will go out in a great fury to destroy, and to wipe out many. And he will pitch the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and nobody will help him.
And in his place a rotten man will stand up, who they won't give the honour of the kingdom to. But he'll come in quietly and get the kingdom by smooth talk. And with the arms of a flood they'll be swept away in front of him and broken, and the leader of the covenant too. And after the agreement is made with him, he'll work cheating. Because he'll come up and get strong with a small people. He'll come in quietly, even into the richest places of the province. And he'll do what his fathers haven't done, or his fathers' fathers. He'll scatter plunder and loot and riches among them. Yes, he'll make plans against the strongholds, but only for a time. And he'll stir up his power and his heart against the king of the south with a great army. And the king of the south will be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army. But he won't stand, because they'll make plans against him. Yes, the ones who eat his food will wreck him, and his army will overflow, and plenty will fall down killed. And the hearts of both these kings will be set on doing harm, and they'll speak lies at one table. But it won't go well, because the end will still be at the time that's set. Then he'll go back to his land with great riches. And his heart will be against the holy covenant. And he'll do things and go back to his own land. At the set time he'll come back and come towards the south. But it won't be like the first time or like the last. Because the ships of Cyprus will come against him. So he'll be sad and go back, and be furious against the holy covenant. So he'll do things. He'll even come back and pay attention to the ones who leave the holy covenant. And arms will stand on his part, and they'll make the holy place common, the stronghold, and take away the daily sacrifice. And they'll set up the disgusting thing that wrecks. And the ones who do wickedly against the covenant he'll take in with smooth talk. But the people who know their God will be strong and do things. And the ones among the people who understand will teach plenty. But they'll fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by looting, for plenty of days. Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain. And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed. Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land. At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
