Abraham and the fathers
Then the high priest said: Are these things so? Stephen replied, "Men, brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Charran, and told him, 'Get out of your country and away from your family, and come into the land I will show you.' Then Abraham came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Charran. After his father died, God moved him from there into this land where you now live. God gave him no inheritance there — not even enough ground to put his foot on — yet promised to give it to him and to his descendants after him, even though at the time Abraham had no child. And God spoke like this, that his offspring would stay in a strange land, and that they'd enslave them and mistreat them four hundred years. The nation that enslaves them I will judge, said God. And after that they'll come out and serve me in this place. He gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham fathered Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day. And Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered the twelve patriarchs. The patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him, and delivered him from all his troubles, giving him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and his whole household. Then a famine came over all Egypt and Chanaan, bringing great trouble, and our fathers could find no food. When Jacob heard there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers. And Joseph's family was made known to Pharaoh. Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob to him, and all his family, seventy-five souls. So Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers. As the time drew near for the promise God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt, Till another king rose who didn't know Joseph. The same dealt cunningly with our family and treated our fathers badly, so they threw out their young children, so they wouldn't live. At that time Moses was born, and he was very beautiful. He was cared for in his father's house for three months. When he was thrown out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up and brought him up as her own son. Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was mighty in words and deeds. When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the Israelites. Seeing one of them suffer wrong, Moses defended him and avenged the man who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian. He thought his brothers would understand that God was using his hand to deliver them, but they didn't understand. The next day he showed himself to them as they fought, and would have set them at one again: Men, you're brothers. Why do you do wrong to each other? But the one who did his neighbour wrong pushed him away: Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? Will you kill me just as you killed the Egyptian yesterday? Then Moses ran at this saying and was a stranger in the land of Midian, where he fathered two sons. After forty years had passed, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina, in a flame of fire in a bush. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. And as he came near to look at it, the voice of the Lord came to him: I'm the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Then Moses shook and didn't dare look. The Lord told him, 'Take the shoes off your feet, because the place where you're standing is holy ground. I have surely seen the suffering of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and come down to deliver them. Now come — I will send you into Egypt.' This same Moses, whom they rejected by saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' God sent to be a ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. He brought them out, after he'd shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years. This is that Moses who said to the Israelites: The Lord your God will raise up a prophet for you from your brothers, like me. Him you'll hear. This is the one who was in the church in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on mount Sina, and with our fathers. He received the lively oracles to give to us. Our fathers would not obey him. They rejected him and in their hearts turned back towards Egypt, saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods to go before us. As for this Moses who brought us out of Egypt, we don't know what's become of him.' They made a calf in those days and offered sacrifice to the idol, and celebrated in the works of their own hands. Then God turned and gave them up to worship the army of heaven, as it's written in the book of the prophets: You people of Israel, have you offered me killed animals and sacrifices for the space of forty years in the wilderness? Yes, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Remphan, figures you made to worship. So I will carry you away beyond Babylon.'

After saying this, he died.
