Ananias and Sapphira

But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a possession. He kept back part of the price, with his wife's full knowledge, and brought the rest and laid it at the apostles' feet. Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land? While it remained unsold, wasn't it yours? And after it was sold, wasn't the money in your own power? Why did you devise this in your heart? You haven't lied to men, but to God." When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. Great fear came upon everyone who heard about it. The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. And about three hours after, when his wife came in, not knowing what was done. Peter asked her, "Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount?" She said, "Yes, for that amount." Peter said, "How is it that you two agreed to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look — the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they'll carry you out too." She immediately fell down at his feet and died. The young men came in, found her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came upon all the church and on everyone who heard these things.

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And kept back part of the money, his wife knowing about it too, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said: Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the money of the land? While it stayed, wasn't it your own? And after it was sold, wasn't it in your own power? Why have you thought up this thing in your heart? You haven't lied to men but to God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost. And great fear came on everyone who heard about it. And the young men got up and wound him up and carried him out and buried him. And about three hours after, when his wife came in, not knowing what was done. And Peter answered her: Tell me whether you sold the land for so much. And she said: Yes, for so much. Then Peter said to her: How is it you've agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look — the feet of the ones who've buried your husband are at the door, and will carry you out. Then she fell down straight away at his feet and gave up the ghost. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out buried her by her husband. And great fear came on all the church and on everyone who heard these things.

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

Signs and wonders

And by the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were worked among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. And of the rest no man dared join himself to them. But the people held them in high regard. More and more believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women. They brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, hoping that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. There came a crowd too out of the cities round about to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and ones troubled with unclean spirits. And they were healed every one.

So they brought out the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, so at least the shadow of Peter going past could cover some of them. The apostles before the council

Then the high priest rose, and everyone with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and were filled with anger. They laid hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors and brought them out and said: Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. When they heard it, they went into the temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest came, and those with him, and called the council together and all the elders of the Israelites, and sent to the prison to have them brought. When the officers came and didn't find them in the prison, they returned and told: We found the prison shut with all safety and the keepers standing outside in front of the doors. But when we'd opened it, we found nobody inside. Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they were in doubt about them, what this would grow to. Then one came and told them: Just then, the men you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people. Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without force. Because they were frightened of the people, in case they'd be stoned. When they'd brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them: Didn't we strictly order you not to teach in this name? And just then, you've filled Jerusalem with your teaching and mean to bring this man's blood on us. Peter and the other apostles answered, "We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed and hanged on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Prince and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. We are his witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." When they heard that, they were cut to the heart and took counsel to kill them. Then a certain Pharisee stood up in the council, named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, honoured among all the people, and commanded the apostles to be put out a little while. Then he said to them, "Men of Israel, take care what you intend to do about these men. For before these days Theudas rose, boasting himself to be somebody, who a number of men joined themselves to, about four hundred. He was killed, and everyone who followed him was scattered and came to nothing. After this man rose Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew many people after him. He died too. And everyone who followed him was scattered. "So now I tell you: leave these men alone and let them be. If this plan or work is merely human, it'll come to nothing. But if it is from God, you won't be able to overthrow it — and you may even find yourselves fighting against God." They agreed with him. And when they'd called the apostles and beaten them, they commanded they shouldn't speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. They left the council rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and preaching Jesus Christ.

Then the high priest got up, and everyone with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and were filled with anger. And laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. Then Peter and the other apostles answered: We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, who you killed and hanged on a tree. Him God has lifted up with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, to give turning back to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we're his witnesses of these things, and the Holy Spirit too, who God has given to the ones who obey him. When they heard that, they were cut to the heart and took counsel to kill them.
