The whirlwind
When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha set out from Gilgal. Elijah told Elisha: Stay here, please. The Lord has sent me to Bethel. But Elisha said: As surely as the Lord lives, and as surely as you live, I won't leave you. So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked: Do you know the Lord is going to take your master away from you today? Elisha said: Yes, I know. Keep it quiet. Elijah told him: Elisha, stay here, please. The Lord has sent me to Jericho. But Elisha said: As surely as the Lord lives, and as surely as you live, I won't leave you. So they went to Jericho. The company of prophets at Jericho came to Elisha and asked: Do you know the Lord is going to take your master away from you today? He answered: Yes, I know. Keep it quiet. Elijah told him: Stay here, please. The Lord has sent me to the Jordan. But Elisha said: As surely as the Lord lives, and as surely as you live, I won't leave you. So the two of them went on. Fifty men from the company of prophets followed and stood at a distance while Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan. Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water. The river divided, and the two of them crossed on dry ground. After they crossed, Elijah said to Elisha: Tell me what I can do for you before I'm taken away. Elisha said: Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. Elijah replied: That's a hard thing you've asked. Still, if you see me when I'm taken from you, it will be yours. If not, it won't. As they walked along talking, a chariot of fire with horses of fire suddenly came between them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw it and cried: My father! My father! The chariot of Israel and its horsemen! Then Elijah disappeared from sight. Elisha grabbed his own clothes and tore them in two. He picked up Elijah's cloak, which had fallen from him, and went back to the bank of the Jordan. Elisha took Elijah's fallen cloak and struck the water with it. He said: Where is the Lord God of Elijah? When he struck the water, it divided, and Elisha crossed over. The company of prophets from Jericho saw him from a distance and said: Elijah's spirit rests on Elisha. They came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. They said: Your servants have fifty strong men here. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has picked him up and dropped him on some mountain or into some valley. Elisha said: Don't send them. But they kept at him until he was embarrassed, so he said: All right, send them. They sent fifty men, who searched for three days but couldn't find Elijah. When they returned to Elisha at Jericho, he said: Didn't I tell you not to go?

And Elisha went over. And when the sons of the prophets at Jericho saw him a long way off, they said: The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha. And they came to meet him and bowed down to the ground in front of him. And they said to him: Look now — there are fifty strong men with your servants. Let them go, please, and look for your master, in case the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and thrown him on some mountain or into some valley. And he said: Don't send. And when they pushed him till he was ashamed, he said: Send. So they sent fifty men. And they looked three days but didn't find him. And when they came back to him — because he stayed at Jericho — he said to them: Didn't I say to you: Don't go?

And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send. And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not. And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?

When they returned to Elisha at Jericho, he said: Didn't I tell you not to go?
And when they came back to him — because he stayed at Jericho — he said to them: Didn't I say to you: Don't go?
And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?
The waters healed
The men of the city said to Elisha: As you can see, sir, this city is in a good spot, but the water is bad and the land is barren. Elisha said: Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it. They brought it to him. He went out to the spring, threw in the salt and said: This is what the Lord says: I have healed this water. It will no longer cause death or barren land. The water has remained wholesome to this day, according to the word Elisha spoke. From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he walked along the road, some children came out of the city and mocked him, shouting: Go up, baldy! Go up, baldy! He turned, looked at them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them. From there Elisha went to Mount Carmel, and afterwards returned to Samaria.
And the men of the town said to Elisha: Look now — the place of this town is pleasant, the way my lord sees. But the water is bad and the ground barren. And he said: Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it. And they brought it to him. And he went out to the spring of the waters and threw the salt in there: This is what the Lord says. I've healed these waters. There won't be any more death or barren ground from there. So the waters were healed right to this day, according to the word Elisha spoke. And he turned back and looked at them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the wood and tore up forty-two of the children. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

He turned, looked at them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them.
And he turned back and looked at them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the wood and tore up forty-two of the children.
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.
From there Elisha went to Mount Carmel, and afterwards returned to Samaria.
