Samaria falls

Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Hoshea, who became his servant and paid him tribute. But the king of Assyria discovered Hoshea's treachery. Hoshea had sent messengers to So king of Egypt and stopped paying his yearly tribute to Assyria. So the king of Assyria seized him and put him in prison. Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land, marched against Samaria and besieged it for three years. And the king of Assyria found treason in Hoshea. Because he'd sent messengers to So king of Egypt and brought no gift to the king of Assyria, the way he did year by year. So the king of Assyria shut him up and tied him in prison. Then the king of Assyria came up through all the land and went up to Samaria and laid siege to it three years. Why it happened

This happened because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them out of Egypt and freed them from Pharaoh king of Egypt. They feared other gods and followed the customs of the nations the Lord had driven out before them, along with practices introduced by the kings of Israel. The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right. They built worship shrines throughout all their cities, from watchtowers to fortified cities. They set up images and pagan worship poles on every high hill and under every green tree. There they burned incense at all the worship shrines, just as the nations the Lord had carried away before them had done. They committed wicked acts that provoked the Lord to anger. They served idols, even though the Lord had told them: You must not do this. The Lord warned Israel and Judah through every prophet and seer: Turn from your evil ways. Keep my commands and rules, according to the whole law I commanded your ancestors and sent to you through my servants the prophets. But they would not listen. They hardened their necks like their ancestors, who did not believe in the Lord their God. They rejected his rules, his covenant with their ancestors and the warnings he had given them. They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. They copied the nations around them, even though the Lord had commanded them not to. They abandoned all the commands of the Lord their God, made two cast calves and a grove, worshipped all the host of heaven and served Baal. They made their sons and daughters pass through the fire, practised divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to doing evil in the Lord's sight, provoking him to anger. So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his sight. Only the tribe of Judah remained. Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God either, but followed the practices Israel had adopted. The Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel, afflicted them and handed them over to plunderers until he had cast them out of his sight. He had torn Israel away from David's house, and they made Jeroboam son of Nebat king. Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great sin. The Israelites continued in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them, until the Lord removed Israel from his sight, just as he had said through all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away from its own land to Assyria, where they remain to this day.

Because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who'd brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods. And they walked in the rules of the nations the Lord threw out in front of the people of Israel, and of the kings of Israel that they'd made. And the people of Israel did secretly things that weren't right against the Lord their God. And they built themselves high places in all their towns, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified town. And they set themselves up pillars and sacred poles on every high hill and under every green tree. And there they burnt incense in all the high places, like the nations the Lord carried off in front of them. And they did wicked things to make the Lord angry. Because they served idols, that the Lord had said to them: You won't do this thing. But the Lord testified against Israel and against Judah by all the prophets and by all the seers: Turn from your evil ways and keep my orders and my rules, according to all the teaching I ordered your fathers and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets. But they wouldn't listen, and they made their necks stiff, like the neck of their fathers who didn't believe in the Lord their God. And they threw off his rules and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies that he testified against them. And they followed emptiness and turned empty, and went after the nations round them, that the Lord had ordered them not to do like. And they left all the orders of the Lord their God and made themselves cast images, two calves, and made a sacred pole, and bowed down to all the army of the sky and served Baal. And they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and used divining and magic, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to make him angry. So the Lord was very angry with Israel and moved them out of his sight. There was nobody left except the tribe of Judah only. Judah didn't keep the orders of the Lord their God either, but walked in the rules of Israel that they made. And the Lord threw off all the offspring of Israel and troubled them and handed them over into the hand of robbers, till he'd thrown them out of his sight. Because he tore Israel from the house of David. And they made Jeroboam son of Nebat king. And Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord and made them sin a great sin. Because the people of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam that he did. They didn't turn from them, till the Lord moved Israel out of his sight, the way he'd said by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria right to this day.

For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree: And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger: For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God. And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only. Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin. For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

The new settlers

The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath and Sepharvaim and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the Israelites. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities. When they first settled there they did not fear the Lord, so the Lord sent lions among them, and some of them were killed. They reported to the king of Assyria: The nations you deported and settled in Samaria's cities don't know how to worship the God of that land. He has sent lions among them, and the lions are killing them because they don't know his ways. Then the king of Assyria commanded: Send back one of the priests you carried away from there. Let him go and live there and teach them how to worship the God of the land. So one of the priests carried away from Samaria returned and lived in Bethel, where he taught them how they should fear the Lord. Even so, every nation made its own gods and put them in the high-place shrines the Samaritans had made, each nation in the cities where they lived. The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth; the men of Cuth made Nergal; the men of Hamath made Ashima; the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. They feared the Lord as well, and appointed priests for the worship shrines from among the lowest of the people, who sacrificed for them in the worship shrines. So they feared the Lord while still serving their own gods, according to the customs of the nations they had been deported from. To this day they continue their former customs. They do not truly fear the Lord or follow the rules, customs, law and command the Lord gave the descendants of Jacob, whom he named Israel. The Lord had made a covenant with Israel and commanded them: You must not fear other gods, bow to them, serve them or sacrifice to them. Instead, you must fear the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. Bow to him and sacrifice to him. Take care always to follow the rules, customs, law and command he wrote for you. Do not fear other gods. Do not forget the covenant I made with you, and do not fear other gods. Fear the Lord your God, and he will rescue you from all your enemies. But they did not listen. They continued their former practices. So these nations feared the Lord while also serving their carved images. Their children and grandchildren have continued doing what their ancestors did, right down to this day.

And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon and from Kuthah and from Avva and from Hamath and from Sepharvaim, and set them in the towns of Samaria instead of the people of Israel. And they took over Samaria and lived in its towns. And at the start of their living there, they didn't fear the Lord. So the Lord sent lions among them, that killed some of them. So they spoke to the king of Assyria: The nations you've carried off and set in the towns of Samaria don't know the way of the God of the land. So he's sent lions among them, and look — they kill them, because they don't know the way of the God of the land. Then the king of Assyria ordered: Carry there one of the priests you brought from there. And let them go and live there, and let him teach them the way of the God of the land. Then one of the priests they'd carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord. But every nation made gods of their own and put them in the houses of the high places the Samaritans had made, every nation in the towns where they lived. And the men of Babylon made Sukkoth Benoth, and the men of Kuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak. And the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelek and Anammelek, the gods of Sepharvaim. So they feared the Lord and made themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. They feared the Lord and served their own gods, according to the way of the nations they'd carried off from there. Right to this day they do according to the ways before. They don't fear the Lord, and they don't do according to their rules or according to their ways, or according to the teaching and the order the Lord ordered the children of Jacob, who he named Israel. And the Lord had made a covenant with them and ordered them: You won't fear other gods or bow down to them or serve them or sacrifice to them. But you'll fear the Lord, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm. Him you'll fear, and to him you'll bow down, and to him you'll do sacrifice. And the rules and the orders and the teaching and the order he wrote for you, you'll watch to do forever. And you won't fear other gods. And you won't forget the covenant I've made with you. And you won't fear other gods. But you'll fear the Lord your God. And he'll rescue you out of the hand of everyone against you. But they didn't listen, but they did according to their way before. So these nations feared the Lord and served their carved images, both their children and their children's children. The way their fathers did, that's what they do right to this day.

And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD: therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which slew some of them. Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land. Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD. Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt. And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them: But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice. And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods. And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods. But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies. Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.
