So having these promises, dear friends, let us clean ourselves out from everything that dirties body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. Make room for us. We have wronged nobody, ruined nobody, taken advantage of nobody. I don't say this to condemn you. I have said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I speak to you very freely. I am very proud of you. I am filled with comfort. In all our trouble my joy overflows. Because even when we came into Macedonia our body had no rest. We were troubled on every side — fighting outside, fears inside. But God, who comforts those who are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus. And not only by his coming, but by the comfort he had from you, when he told us how much you longed for me, how you mourned, how deeply you cared. So I was gladder still.

Godly sorrow
Because even if I made you sad with my letter, I don't regret it — though I did regret it, because I can see the letter made you sad, if only for a while. Now I am glad — not that you were made sad, but that your sadness led you to repentance. You were made sad in a godly way, so you weren't harmed by us in any way at all. Because godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret. But the sorrow of the world brings death. Look what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what anger, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves clear in this matter. So although I wrote to you, it wasn't for the sake of the one who did the wrong, or the one who was wronged, but so that our care for you in God's eyes might be made plain to you. That is why we were comforted. And on top of our own comfort, we were even gladder to see how glad Titus was, because his spirit had been set at rest by all of you. Because if I had boasted to him about you at all, I wasn't put to shame. Just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting to Titus has proved true as well. And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers how obedient you all were, and how you welcomed him with fear and trembling. So I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.

So we were comforted in your comfort. Yes, and we celebrated the more strongly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. Because if I've boasted anything to him about you, I'm not ashamed. But as we spoke everything to you in truth, that's how our boasting to Titus is found a truth too. And his inward love is more strongly towards you, while he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and shaking you took him in. So I celebrate that I've got confidence in you in everything.
