Forgive the one who grieved you
So I made up my mind not to come to you on another painful visit. Because if I make you sad, who is left to make me glad but the very person I have made sad? And that is why I wrote as I did — so that when I came I wouldn't be grieved by the ones who ought to make me glad. I was confident about all of you, that my joy is the joy of all of you. Because I wrote to you out of great distress and anguish of heart, and with many tears — not to make you sad, but so you would know how deeply I love you. But if anyone has caused grief, he hasn't grieved me so much as all of you, at least in part — and I don't want to overstate it. The punishment the majority handed him is enough for a man like that. So now you ought to do the opposite: forgive him and comfort him, in case he is swallowed up by too much sorrow. So I am asking you to make your love for him plain again. Because this is why I wrote: to test you and see whether you would be obedient in everything. Anyone you forgive, I forgive too. And what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sake in the presence of Christ, so Satan wouldn't get the better of us — because we know his tricks well enough.
But I settled this with myself, that I wouldn't come again to you in heaviness. Because if I make you sorry, who's the one who makes me glad, except the same one who's made sorry by me? And I wrote this same to you, in case when I came I should have sorrow from the ones I ought to celebrate with, having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all. Because out of plenty of trouble and pain of heart I wrote to you with plenty of tears — not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love I have more strongly for you. But if any has caused grief, he hasn't grieved me but in part — so I don't press too hard on you all. Enough for a man like that is this punishment given by plenty. So on the other hand you ought rather to forgive him and comfort him, in case a man like that should be swallowed up with too much sorrow. So I beg you that you'd make firm your love towards him. Because I wrote for this reason too, so I could know the proof of you, whether you're obedient in everything. Who you forgive anything, I forgive too. Because if I forgave anything, who I forgave it, I forgave it for your sakes in the person of Christ. In case Satan should get the better of us. Because we aren't ignorant of what he's up to.

so Satan wouldn't get the better of us — because we know his tricks well enough.
In case Satan should get the better of us. Because we aren't ignorant of what he's up to.
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
The sweet smell of Christ
Now when I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, and a door was opened to me by the Lord, I had no rest in my spirit, because I didn't find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on into Macedonia. Now thanks be to God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ, and through us spreads the scent of the knowledge of him everywhere. Because to God we are the sweet smell of Christ, among those who are saved and among those who perish. To the one we are the smell of death leading to death, and to the other the smell of life leading to life. And who is equal to any of this? Because we aren't like so many who corrupt the word of God. We speak in Christ with sincerity, as men sent from God and standing in his eyes.

For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
To the one we are the smell of death leading to death, and to the other the smell of life leading to life. And who is equal to any of this?
To the one we're the smell of death to death, and to the other the smell of life to life. And who's fit for these things?
To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
Because we aren't like so many who corrupt the word of God. We speak in Christ with sincerity, as men sent from God and standing in his eyes.
Because we aren't like plenty who trade the word of God for gain. But as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.
For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
