The God of all comfort

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God at Corinth, along with all the saints in the whole of Achaia: grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trouble, so we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have had from God. Because as the sufferings of Christ overflow into us, so through Christ our comfort overflows too. If we are troubled, it is for your comfort and salvation, which works itself out as you endure the same sufferings we suffer. And if we are comforted, it is for your comfort and salvation. And our hope for you is steady, knowing that as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort. Because we don't want you in the dark, brothers, about the trouble that came on us in Asia. We were weighed down beyond what we could bear, so much that we gave up on life itself. In fact we felt we had the death sentence on us — and that was so we wouldn't trust in ourselves but in God, who raises the dead. He rescued us from so great a death, and he rescues us still. And we have put our hope in him that he will rescue us again, with you helping by praying for us — so that thanks may be given by many on our behalf for the favour shown us through the prayers of many.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God at Corinth, with all the holy ones in all Achaia: Grace be to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. Who comforts us in all our trouble, so we can comfort the ones in any trouble by the comfort we're comforted by ourselves of God. Because the way the sufferings of Christ are plentiful in us, that's how our comfort is plentiful too by Christ. And whether we're troubled, it's for your comfort and salvation, that works in the putting up with the same sufferings we suffer too. Or whether we're comforted, it's for your comfort and salvation. And our hope of you is steady, knowing that as you share in the sufferings, that's how you'll share in the comfort too. Because we don't want you, brothers, to be without knowing about our trouble that came to us in Asia — that we were pressed past measure, above strength, so we gave up hope even of life. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, so we shouldn't trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead. Who rescued us from so great a death and does rescue. In him we trust that he'll still rescue us. You helping together by prayer for us too, so thanks can be given by plenty on our behalf for the gift given us by plenty of people.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

Paul's change of plan

Because this is what we take pride in: the testimony of our conscience that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and toward you especially, with simplicity and godly sincerity, not with worldly cleverness but by the grace of God. We aren't writing you anything you can't read and understand. And I hope you will understand it right to the end, just as you have understood us in part — that we are your pride, as you will be ours, on the day of the Lord Jesus. And confident of that, I meant to come to you first, so you could have a second benefit, and to pass by you on my way into Macedonia, and come back to you out of Macedonia, and be sent on my way by you toward Judaea. So when I planned that, was I being careless? Or do I make my plans according to the flesh, saying Yes and No in the same breath? But as God is true, our word to you wasn't Yes and No. Because the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us — by me and Silvanus and Timotheus — wasn't Yes and No. In him it has always been Yes. Because all the promises of God are Yes in him, and Amen in him, to the glory of God through us. Now it is God who makes us stand firm with you in Christ, and who has anointed us. He has also put his seal on us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a deposit. And I call God as a witness against my own soul: it was to spare you that I didn't come back to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith — we work alongside you for your joy, because it is by faith that you stand.

Because our boasting is this, the witness of our conscience — that in simplicity and godly honesty, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, we've had our way of life in the world, and more strongly towards you. Because we write nothing else to you than what you read or own up to. And I trust you'll own up right to the end. As you've owned up to us in part too, that we're your boasting, the way you're ours too in the day of the Lord Jesus. And in this confidence I meant to come to you before, so you could have a second benefit. And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia to you, and to be brought on my way by you towards Judea. So when I meant this, did I use lightness? Or the things I mean, do I mean them the way the flesh does, so with me there should be Yes, yes, and No, no? But as God is true, our word to you wasn't Yes and No. Because the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us — by me and Silvanus and Timothy — wasn't Yes and No, but in him was Yes. Because all the promises of God in him are Yes, and in him Amen, to the glory of God by us. Now the one who makes us firm with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God. Who's sealed us too and given the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts. What's more, I call God as a witness on my soul, that to spare you I didn't come yet to Corinth. Not that we have rule over your faith, but are helpers of your joy. Because by faith you stand.

For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus. And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea. When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth. Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

Because this is what we take pride in: the testimony of our conscience that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and toward you especially, with simplicity and godly sincerity, not with worldly cleverness but by the grace of God.

King James Version, 1611

As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.

And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia to you, and to be brought on my way by you towards Judea.

King James Version, 1611

And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
