Josiah cleans the land
Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. Josiah did what was right in the Lord's sight. He followed the ways of his ancestor David and didn't turn aside to the right or the left. In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor David. In the twelfth year he began clearing Judah and Jerusalem of the worship shrines, pagan worship poles, carved images and cast-metal idols. They broke down the altars of the Baals before him, and he cut down the incense altars that were up above them. And he broke the pagan worship poles and the carved images and the cast-metal idols in pieces and made dust of them, and scattered it on the graves of those who'd sacrificed to them. He burnt the bones of the priests on their altars, and cleaned Judah and Jerusalem. He did the same in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, right to Naphtali, with their tools round about. When he'd broken down the altars and the pagan worship poles and had beaten the carved images into powder and cut down all the incense altars through all the land of Israel, he came back to Jerusalem. Now in the eighteenth year of his rule, when he'd cleaned the land and the house, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the governor of the city and Joah son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the temple of the Lord his God. When they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they handed over the money that was brought into the temple of God, that the Levites who kept the doors had gathered from Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the rest of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin, and they came back to Jerusalem. They put it into the hand of the workmen who had the oversight of the temple of the Lord. And they gave it to the workmen who worked in the temple of the Lord, to repair and mend the house. They gave it to the craftsmen and builders too, to buy cut stone and timber for joints and to make beams for the houses the kings of Judah had wrecked. The men did the work faithfully. And the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites, to push it on. And the Levites, all who could play instruments of music, Were over those who carried loads too, and were overseers of everyone who did the work in any kind of service. And of the Levites there were scribes and officers and gatekeepers.

Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

The king ordered Hilkiah and Ahikam son of Shaphan and Abdon son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah a servant of the king: Go and ask the Lord for me and for those left in Israel and Judah about the words of the book that's been found. The Lord's anger poured out on us is great, because our ancestors didn't keep the word of the Lord or do everything written in this book. Hilkiah and those the king had set went to Huldah the prophet, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath son of Hasrah, keeper of the clothes. Now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter. And they spoke to her about it. She answered them: This is what the Lord God of Israel says. Tell the man who sent you to me: This is what the Lord says. I'll bring trouble on this place and on the people who live there, all the curses written in the book they've read in front of the king of Judah. Because they've left me and have burnt incense to other gods, to make me angry with all the works of their hands. So my anger will be poured out on this place and won't be put out. About the king of Judah, who sent you to ask of the Lord, this is what you'll say to him: This is what the Lord God of Israel says about the words you've heard. Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me, tore your clothes and wept before me, I have heard you, says the Lord. I'll gather you to your fathers, and you'll be gathered to your grave in peace. And your eyes won't see all the trouble I'll bring on this place and on the people who live there. So they brought the king word back.

The covenant
Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. The king went up into the temple of the Lord, and all the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people, great and small. And he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the temple of the Lord. The king stood in his place and made a covenant before the Lord — to follow the Lord and to keep his orders and his instructions and his rules with all his heart and with all his soul, to carry out the words of the covenant written in this book. He made everyone there in Jerusalem and Benjamin stand to it. And the people of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. Josiah took away all the disgusting things out of all the countries that belonged to the Israelites, and made everyone in Israel serve the Lord their God.
