Solomon's letter to Hiram
Solomon decided to build a temple for the name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself. Solomon sent to Huram king of Tyre: The way you dealt with David my father and sent him cedars to build himself a temple to live in — do the same for me. I'm building a house for the name of the Lord my God, to set it apart to him and to burn sweet incense before him, and for the bread of the Presence always, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths and on the new moons and on the set feasts of the Lord our God. This is a permanent rule for Israel. The temple I'm about to build will be great, because our God is greater than all gods. But who could actually build him a house, when heaven itself — even the highest heaven — can't contain him? Who am I to build him anything except a place to burn sacrifices before him? Send me a man now who's skilful to work in gold and in silver and in bronze and in iron, and in purple and scarlet and blue, and who knows how to carve, to be with the skilful men who are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, that David my father prepared. Send me cedar trees too, fir trees and algum trees, out of Lebanon. Because I know your servants can cut timber in Lebanon. He's skilful to work in gold and in silver, in bronze, in iron, in stone and in timber, in purple, in blue and in fine linen and in scarlet, and to carve any kind of carving and to work out any design that's given him, with your skilful men and with the skilful men of my lord David your father. Now let my lord send the wheat and the barley, the oil and the wine that he's spoken about, to his servants. We'll cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as you need. Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants: And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem. And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred. And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourscore thousand to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.
