Paul's way among them
You know yourselves, brothers, that our coming to you wasn't a waste of time. Even after we had been through it at Philippi, and been treated shamefully, as you know, we found the courage in our God to tell you the gospel of God in the face of a lot of opposition. Because what we urged on you didn't come out of error, or dirty motives, or trickery. We speak as men approved by God and trusted with the gospel — not out to please people, but to please God, who weighs up our hearts. We never came at you with flattery, as you know, or used a front to cover up greed. God is our witness. We weren't after glory from people, either from you or anyone else, though as apostles of Christ we could have been burdensome. Instead we were gentle among you, like a nurse caring for her children. We were that fond of you, we were glad to share with you not only the gospel of God but our own lives as well, because you had become dear to us. You remember, brothers, how we worked and wore ourselves out. We worked night and day so we wouldn't be a burden on any of you, while we preached the gospel of God to you. You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy and upright and blameless our conduct was among you believers. You know how we dealt with each one of you the way a father does with his own children — encouraging you, comforting you, urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
Because you know yourselves, brothers, that our coming in to you wasn't for nothing. But even after we'd suffered before and were shamefully treated, the way you know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak to you the good news of God with plenty of striving. Because our pushing on wasn't of deceit or of uncleanness or in trickery. But as we were allowed of God to be handed the good news, that's how we speak — not as pleasing men but God, who tests our hearts. Because at no time did we use flattering words, the way you know, or a cloak of greed. God is witness. And we didn't look for glory of men, either of you or of others, when we could have been a load, as the apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, the way a nurse looks after her children. So being greatly fond of you, we were willing to have handed to you not the good news of God only but our own souls too, because you were dear to us. Because you remember, brothers, our labour and hard work. Because working night and day, so we wouldn't be a load to any of you, we preached to you the good news of God. You're witnesses, and God too, how holily and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe. The way you know how we pushed on and comforted and charged every one of you, the way a father does his children. So you'd walk worthy of God, who's called you to his kingdom and glory.

So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.
You remember, brothers, how we worked and wore ourselves out. We worked night and day so we wouldn't be a burden on any of you, while we preached the gospel of God to you.
Because you remember, brothers, our labour and hard work. Because working night and day, so we wouldn't be a load to any of you, we preached to you the good news of God.

As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
So you'd walk worthy of God, who's called you to his kingdom and glory.
That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
They took the word
And this is why we thank God without a break: when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you took it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe. Because you, brothers, became followers of the churches of God in Judaea that are in Christ Jesus. You went through the same things at the hands of your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, who killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and persecuted us. They do not please God, and they are contrary to all men, They stop us speaking to the Gentiles so they might be saved, piling up their sins all the time. Now God's anger has come down on them in full. But brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short while — out of sight, not out of mind — we tried all the harder to see you face to face, because we wanted it badly. That is why we wanted to come to you. I, Paul, tried more than once, but Satan blocked our way. Because what is our hope, or our joy, or the crown we will be proud of, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming? Isn't it you? You are our glory and our joy.
For this reason we thank God without stopping too, because when you took the word of God you heard of us, you took it not as the word of men but (the way it is truly) the word of God, that works too in you who believe. Because you, brothers, turned followers of the churches of God in Judea that are in Christ Jesus. Because you've suffered the same things too of your own countrymen, the way they have of the Jews. Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have chased us out, and they don't please God and are against all men. Stopping us from speaking to the nations so they can be saved — to fill up their sins always. Because anger has come on them to the utmost. But we, brothers, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, tried the more strongly to see your face with great longing. So we would have come to you, even I Paul, once and again. But Satan stopped us. Because what's our hope or joy or crown of celebrating? Isn't it even you in front of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? Because you're our glory and joy.
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. Because you, brothers, became followers of the churches of God in Judaea that are in Christ Jesus. You went through the same things at the hands of your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,
Because you, brothers, turned followers of the churches of God in Judea that are in Christ Jesus. Because you've suffered the same things too of your own countrymen, the way they have of the Jews.
For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
who killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and persecuted us. They do not please God, and they are contrary to all men,
Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have chased us out, and they don't please God and are against all men.
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
They stop us speaking to the Gentiles so they might be saved, piling up their sins all the time. Now God's anger has come down on them in full.
Stopping us from speaking to the nations so they can be saved — to fill up their sins always. Because anger has come on them to the utmost.
Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
But brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short while — out of sight, not out of mind — we tried all the harder to see you face to face, because we wanted it badly.
But we, brothers, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, tried the more strongly to see your face with great longing.

That is why we wanted to come to you. I, Paul, tried more than once, but Satan blocked our way.
So we would have come to you, even I Paul, once and again. But Satan stopped us.
Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
Because what is our hope, or our joy, or the crown we will be proud of, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming? Isn't it you?
Because what's our hope or joy or crown of celebrating? Isn't it even you in front of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
You are our glory and our joy.
Because you're our glory and joy.
For ye are our glory and joy.
