In those days the Philistines gathered their forces for war against Israel. Achish told David: Understand this — you and your men are coming with me into battle. David answered Achish: Then you'll see for yourself what your servant can do. Achish said: In that case, I'll make you my personal bodyguard for life. Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land. The Philistines assembled and camped at Shunem. Saul gathered all Israel, and they camped at Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid, and terror filled his heart. Saul inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him — not by dreams, Urim or prophets. So Saul told his servants: Find me a woman who is a medium, and I'll go ask her. His servants said: There is a medium at Endor.

So Saul told his servants: Find me a woman who is a medium, and I'll go ask her. His servants said: There is a medium at Endor.
Then Saul said to his servants: Look for me a woman who has a familiar spirit, so I can go to her and ask of her. And his servants said to him: Look — there's a woman with a familiar spirit at Endor.
Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.
The woman at Endor
Saul disguised himself in different clothes and went with two men to the woman at night. He said: Consult a spirit for me and bring up the person I name. The woman answered: You know what Saul has done — he has removed the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you setting a trap for me that could get me killed? Saul swore to her by the Lord: As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this. The woman asked: Who should I bring up for you? Saul answered: Bring up Samuel. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out loudly and said to Saul: Why have you deceived me? You are Saul! The king said: Don't be afraid. What do you see? She answered: I see a spirit coming up out of the earth. Saul asked: What does he look like? She answered: An old man is coming up, wrapped in a robe. Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed low with his face to the ground. Samuel said to Saul: Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up? Saul answered: I am in great distress. The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me by prophets or dreams. So I called you to tell me what I should do. Samuel said: Why ask me, since the Lord has turned away from you and become your enemy? The Lord has done what he spoke through me. He has torn the kingdom from your hand and given it to your neighbour David. Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce anger against Amalek, the Lord has done this to you today. The Lord will give Israel and you into the hand of the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and the Lord will also give Israel's army into the Philistines' hand. Saul immediately fell full-length on the ground, terrified by Samuel's words. He had no strength left, because he had eaten nothing all day and all night. The woman came over to Saul and saw how badly shaken he was. She said: Your servant listened to you and risked her life by doing what you asked. Now please listen to your servant in return. Let me put some food before you. Eat, so you'll have enough strength for the journey. Saul refused: I won't eat. But his servants and the woman urged him until he listened. He got up from the ground and sat on the bed. The woman had a fattened calf at the house. She quickly slaughtered it, took flour, kneaded dough and baked unleavened bread. She served the food to Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they got up and left that same night.
And Saul dressed himself differently and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him. And they came to the woman by night. And he said: Bring me up the one I name to you, please. And the woman said to him: Look — you know what Saul has done, how he's cut off the ones with familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land. So why do you lay a trap for my life, to make me die? And Saul swore to her by the Lord: As surely as the Lord lives, no punishment will come on you for this thing. Then the woman said: Who'll I bring up to you? And he said: Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul: Why have you tricked me? Because you're Saul. And the king said to her: Don't be frightened. Because what did you see? And the woman said to Saul: I saw gods coming up out of the earth. And he said to her: What does he look like? And she said: An old man is coming up, and he's covered with a robe. And Saul understood it was Samuel, and he bowed his face to the ground and bowed down. And Samuel said to Saul: Why have you troubled me by bringing me up? And Saul answered: I'm badly troubled. Because the Philistines are making war against me, and God has gone from me and doesn't answer me any more, not by prophets or by dreams. So I've called you, so you can make known to me what I should do. Then Samuel said: So why do you ask of me, seeing the Lord has gone from you and has become the one against you? And the Lord has done to him the way he spoke by me. Because the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbour, to David. Because you didn't listen to the voice of the Lord or carry out his fierce anger on Amalek, that's why the Lord has done this thing to you today. What's more, the Lord will hand Israel over with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will hand over the army of Israel too into the hand of the Philistines. Then Saul fell straight away his full length on the earth and was badly frightened because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, because he'd eaten no food all day or all night. And the woman came to Saul and saw he was badly troubled, and said to him: Look — your servant has listened to your voice, and I've put my life in my hand and have listened to your words that you spoke to me. So now listen to the voice of your servant too, please, and let me set a bit of bread in front of you. And eat, so you can have strength when you go on your way. But he refused: I won't eat. But his servants, and the woman too, pushed him. And he listened to their voice. So he got up from the earth and sat on the bed. And the woman had a fat calf in the house. And she hurried and killed it, and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread with it. And she brought it in front of Saul and in front of his servants. And they ate. Then they got up and went away that night.

And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David: Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day. Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof: And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

Saul swore to her by the Lord: As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.
And Saul swore to her by the Lord: As surely as the Lord lives, no punishment will come on you for this thing.
And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
The woman asked: Who should I bring up for you? Saul answered: Bring up Samuel.
Then the woman said: Who'll I bring up to you? And he said: Bring me up Samuel.
Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out loudly and said to Saul: Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!

And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Samuel said: Why ask me, since the Lord has turned away from you and become your enemy?
Then Samuel said: So why do you ask of me, seeing the Lord has gone from you and has become the one against you?
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
The Lord has done what he spoke through me. He has torn the kingdom from your hand and given it to your neighbour David.
And the Lord has done to him the way he spoke by me. Because the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbour, to David.
And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce anger against Amalek, the Lord has done this to you today.
Because you didn't listen to the voice of the Lord or carry out his fierce anger on Amalek, that's why the Lord has done this thing to you today.
Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.
The Lord will give Israel and you into the hand of the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and the Lord will also give Israel's army into the Philistines' hand.
What's more, the Lord will hand Israel over with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will hand over the army of Israel too into the hand of the Philistines.
