Keilah saved
David was told: The Philistines are attacking Keilah and robbing the threshing floors. David inquired of the Lord: Should I go and attack these Philistines? The Lord answered: Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah. But David's men said: We're scared enough here in Judah. How much worse if we go to Keilah against the Philistine army? David inquired of the Lord again. The Lord answered: Up you get. Go down to Keilah, because I will give the Philistines into your hand. So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines, drove off their livestock and inflicted heavy losses. In this way David saved the people of Keilah. When Abiathar son of Ahimelech fled to David at Keilah, he brought the priestly apron with him. Saul was told David had entered Keilah. He said: God has given him into my hands. He's trapped himself by entering a city with gates and bars. Saul called up the whole army for war and prepared to march on Keilah and besiege David and his men. David learned Saul was plotting against him, so he told Abiathar the priest: Bring the priestly apron. David prayed: Lord God of Israel, your servant has heard for certain that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the city because of me. Will the leaders of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, please tell your servant. The Lord answered: He will come down. Then David asked: Will the leaders of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul? The Lord answered: They will. David and his men, about six hundred in all, left Keilah and moved from place to place. When Saul heard David had escaped from Keilah, he called off the expedition.

So David saved the people of Keilah. And when Abiathar son of Ahimelek ran to David to Keilah, he came down with an ephod in his hand. And Saul was told David had come to Keilah. And Saul said: God has handed him over into my hand. Because he's shut in by going into a town with gates and bars. And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to lay siege to David and his men. And David knew Saul was quietly planning harm against him, and he said to Abiathar the priest: Bring the ephod here. Then David said: Lord God of Israel, your servant has definitely heard that Saul means to come to Keilah, to wreck the town because of me. Will the men of Keilah hand me over into his hand? Will Saul come down, the way your servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, tell your servant, please. And the Lord said: He'll come down. Then David said: Will the men of Keilah hand me and my men over into the hand of Saul? And the Lord said: They'll hand you over. Then David and his men, about six hundred, got up and went out of Keilah and went wherever they could go. And Saul was told David had got away from Keilah. And he stopped going out.
Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors. Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod. Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake. Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down. Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up. Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth.

Will the men of Keilah hand me over into his hand? Will Saul come down, the way your servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, tell your servant, please. And the Lord said: He'll come down.
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down.
Then David asked: Will the leaders of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul? The Lord answered: They will.
Then David said: Will the men of Keilah hand me and my men over into the hand of Saul? And the Lord said: They'll hand you over.
Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.
David and his men, about six hundred in all, left Keilah and moved from place to place. When Saul heard David had escaped from Keilah, he called off the expedition.

In the wilderness of Ziph
David stayed in wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the wilderness of Ziph. Saul hunted him day after day, but God never gave David into his hand. David knew Saul had come out to take his life. He was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. Jonathan son of Saul went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. Don't be afraid, he said. My father Saul won't lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I'll be second to you. Even my father Saul knows that. The two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David stayed at Horesh, and Jonathan went home. The Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said: David is hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah south of Jeshimon. So now, Your Majesty, come down whenever you like. Our part will be to hand David over to the king. Saul said: May the Lord bless you for having some sympathy for me. Go and make sure. Find out exactly where he stays and who has seen him there, because I'm told he's very shrewd. Find out every hiding place he uses and come back when you're certain. Then I'll go with you. If he's anywhere in the land, I'll search him out among all the clans of Judah. The Ziphites left ahead of Saul. David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah south of Jeshimon. Saul and his men went looking for David. When David heard, he moved down to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. Saul heard about it and pursued him there. Saul moved along one side of the mountain while David and his men moved along the other. David was hurrying to escape as Saul's men closed in around them. But a messenger came to Saul saying: Hurry back! The Philistines have raided the land. So Saul broke off the pursuit and went to face the Philistines. That is why the place was called the Rock of Escape. David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of En-Gedi.
And David stayed in the wilderness in strongholds, and stayed in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul looked for him every day, but God didn't hand him over into his hand. And David saw Saul had come out to look for his life. And David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood. And Jonathan, Saul's son, got up and went to David in the wood and made his hand strong in God. And he said to him: Don't be frightened. Because the hand of Saul my father won't find you. And you'll be king over Israel, and I'll be next to you. And Saul my father knows that too. And they both made a covenant in front of the Lord. And David stayed in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house. Then the Ziphites came up to Saul in Gibeah: Isn't David hiding with us in strongholds in the wood, in the hill of Hakilah, which is south of Jeshimon? So now come down, king, according to all the wanting of your soul to come down. And our part will be to hand him over into the king's hand. See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah. The two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David stayed at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.
And they both made a covenant in front of the Lord. And David stayed in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
The Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said: David is hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah south of Jeshimon.
Then the Ziphites came up to Saul in Gibeah: Isn't David hiding with us in strongholds in the wood, in the hill of Hakilah, which is south of Jeshimon?
Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?
So now, Your Majesty, come down whenever you like. Our part will be to hand David over to the king.
So now come down, king, according to all the wanting of your soul to come down. And our part will be to hand him over into the king's hand.

Saul said: May the Lord bless you for having some sympathy for me.

The Ziphites left ahead of Saul. David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah south of Jeshimon.
And they got up and went to Ziph in front of Saul. But David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain south of Jeshimon.
And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
Saul and his men went looking for David. When David heard, he moved down to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. Saul heard about it and pursued him there.
Saul went too, and his men, to look for him. And they told David. So he came down into a rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard about it, he chased David in the wilderness of Maon.
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
Saul moved along one side of the mountain while David and his men moved along the other. David was hurrying to escape as Saul's men closed in around them.
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain. And David hurried to get away because he was frightened of Saul. Because Saul and his men were surrounding David and his men to take them.
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
But a messenger came to Saul saying: Hurry back! The Philistines have raided the land.

But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.
So Saul broke off the pursuit and went to face the Philistines. That is why the place was called the Rock of Escape.

Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Selahammahlekoth.
David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of En-Gedi.
And David went up from there and lived in strongholds at En Gedi.
And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi.
