The cave of Adullam

David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father's household heard about it, they went down to join him. Everyone in distress, everyone in debt, and everyone bitter in spirit gathered around David, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him. From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and asked the king of Moab: Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do for me. He brought his parents before the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold. The prophet Gad told David: Don't stay in the stronghold. Leave and go into the land of Judah. So David went to the forest of Hereth.

So David went from there and got away to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard about it, they went down there to him. And everyone in trouble and everyone in debt and everyone bitter of soul gathered to him. And he was captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him. And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab: Let my father and my mother come out and be with you, please, till I know what God will do for me. And he brought them in front of the king of Moab. And they lived with him all the time David was in the stronghold. And the prophet Gad said to David: Don't stay in the stronghold. Go and get yourself into the land of Judah. Then David went and came into the forest of Hereth.

David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

Doeg's report

Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. Saul was sitting under the tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, spear in hand, with all his servants standing around him. Saul said to the servants standing around him: Listen, Benjamites. Is Jesse's son going to give every one of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and hundreds? Is that why you've all conspired against me? None of you told me my own son made a covenant with Jesse's son. None of you cares about me or tells me my son has stirred up my servant to ambush me, as he is doing today. Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Saul's servants, answered: I saw Jesse's son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob. Ahimelech inquired of the Lord for David, gave him food and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. The king summoned Ahimelech son of Ahitub and his whole father's household — all the priests at Nob. They all came before the king. Saul said: Listen to me, son of Ahitub. Ahimelech answered: Yes, my lord. Saul said to him: Why have you and Jesse's son conspired against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him, so he could rise against me and lie in wait, as he is doing today. Ahimelech answered the king: Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king's son-in-law, captain of your guard and honoured in your household? Was that the first time I inquired of God for him? Certainly not. The king must not accuse your servant or anyone in my father's house, because I knew nothing at all about this. But the king said: You will surely die, Ahimelech — you and your whole father's house. The king ordered the guards standing around him: Turn and kill the priests of the Lord. They're on David's side too. They knew he was fleeing and didn't tell me. But the king's servants refused to raise a hand against the Lord's priests. Then the king ordered Doeg: You turn and strike the priests. So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen priestly apron. He also put Nob, the city of the priests, to the sword — men and women, children and infants, cattle, donkeys and sheep.

When Saul heard David was found, and the men with him — now Saul stayed in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants standing round him — then Saul said to his servants standing round him: Listen now, you Benjamites. Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, that you've all plotted against me? And there's nobody who tells me my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse. And there isn't one of you sorry for me or who tells me my son has stirred up my servant against me to lie in wait, the way it is today. Then Doeg the Edomite answered, who was set over the servants of Saul: I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelek son of Ahitub. And he asked of the Lord for him and gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. Then the king sent to call Ahimelek the priest son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests in Nob. And they all came to the king. And Saul said: Listen now, son of Ahitub. And he answered: Here I am, my lord. And Saul said to him: Why have you plotted against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you've given him bread and a sword and have asked of God for him, so he could get up against me to lie in wait, the way it is today? Then Ahimelek answered the king: And who's so faithful among all your servants as David, who's the king's son-in-law and goes at your order and is honoured in your house? Did I start asking of God for him today? Far be it from me. Don't let the king lay anything to his servant or to all the house of my father. Because your servant knew nothing of all this, little or much. And the king said: You'll die for sure, Ahimelek, you and all your father's house. And the king said to the guard standing round him: Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand is with David too, and because they knew when he ran and didn't tell me. But the servants of the king wouldn't put out their hand to fall on the priests of the Lord. And the king said to Doeg: You turn and fall on the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned and fell on the priests, and killed that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. And he struck Nob, the town of the priests, with the edge of the sword — both men and women, children and babies, and oxen and donkeys and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;) Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. And he enquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord. And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house? Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father’s house. And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD: because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD. And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
