Saul anointed
Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it over Saul's head, kissed him and said: Hasn't the Lord anointed you leader over his inheritance? When you leave me today, you'll meet two men near Rachel's tomb at Zelzah in Benjamin. They'll tell you: The donkeys you were looking for have been found, and now your father has forgotten about them and is worried about you, wondering what to do about his son. From there, go on to the oak of Tabor. Three men on their way to worship God at Bethel will meet you: one carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. They'll greet you and give you two loaves of bread. Take them from their hands. After that you'll come to the hill of God, where there is a Philistine garrison. As you enter the city, you'll meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, with harp, tambourine, flute and lyre being played before them. They will be prophesying. Then the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully on you. You'll prophesy with them and be changed into a different man. When these signs happen, do whatever the situation calls for, because God is with you. Then go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I'll come to you there to offer burnt offerings and peace offerings. Wait seven days until I arrive and tell you what to do. As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed his heart, and all those signs happened that day. When Saul and his servant reached the hill, a group of prophets met him. The Spirit of God came powerfully on Saul, and he prophesied with them. Everyone who had known Saul before saw him prophesying with the prophets and said to each other: What on earth has happened to Kish's son? Is Saul one of the prophets now? A man from that place answered: And who is their father? That is how the saying arose: Is Saul among the prophets too? When Saul finished prophesying, he went up to the high place. Is Saul also among the prophets? And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets? And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place. And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel. And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you. And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

A man from that place answered: And who is their father? That is how the saying arose: Is Saul among the prophets too?

Samuel summoned the people to the Lord at Mizpah. He told the Israelites: This is what the Lord God of Israel says. I brought Israel out of Egypt and rescued you from the Egyptians and from all the kingdoms that oppressed you. But today you've rejected your God, the one who saves you from all your troubles and disasters, and you've said: No, put a king over us. So present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans. Samuel brought Israel's tribes forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin clan by clan. The clan of Matri was chosen, and finally Saul son of Kish. But when they looked for Saul, he was nowhere to be found. They inquired of the Lord again: Has the man come here? The Lord answered: Yes. He's hiding among the baggage. They ran over and brought Saul out. When he stood among the people, he was head and shoulders taller than everyone else. Samuel said to all the people: See the man the Lord has chosen? There's nobody else like him among all the people. The crowd shouted: Long live the king! Samuel explained to the people the rights and duties of kingship, wrote them in a scroll and laid it before the Lord. Then he sent everyone home. Saul also went home to Gibeah, accompanied by a group of men whose hearts God had touched. But some worthless men sneered: How is this man going to save us? They despised him and brought him no gifts. Saul said nothing.
