David's charge

As David's death drew near, he gave his son Solomon these instructions: I'm going the way everyone on earth must go. So be strong, and carry yourself like a man. Keep the charge of the Lord your God. Follow his ways and keep his rules, commands, judgments and instructions, as written in the law of Moses. Then you'll prosper in whatever you do and wherever you turn. Then the Lord can fulfil what he promised me: If your children take care how they live and walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never lack a man on the throne of Israel. You also know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether, the two commanders of Israel's armies. He murdered them in peacetime, shedding the blood of war and staining the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet. Deal with him according to your wisdom. Don't let his grey head go down to the grave in peace. But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite and give them a place at your table, because they stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom. And remember Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim. He cursed me bitterly the day I went to Mahanaim. Later he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by the Lord that I would not kill him with the sword. But don't treat him as innocent. You're a wise man; you'll know what to do. Bring his grey head down to the grave with blood. Then David died and was buried in the City of David. David had reigned over Israel for forty years: seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.

Now the days of David came near that he should die. And he ordered Solomon his son: I go the way of all the earth. So be strong and act like a man. And keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his rules and his orders and his judgments and his testimonies, the way it's written in the teaching of Moses, so you can do well in everything you do and wherever you turn yourself. So the Lord can carry out his word that he spoke about me: If your children watch their way, to walk in front of me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there won't fail you a man on the throne of Israel. What's more, you know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the armies of Israel, to Abner son of Ner and to Amasa son of Jether, who he killed and spilt the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war on his belt round his waist and in his sandals on his feet. So do according to your wisdom, and don't let his grey head go down to the grave in peace. But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of the ones who eat at your table. Because that's how they came to me when I ran from Absalom your brother. And look — you've got with you Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, who cursed me with a hard curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by the Lord: I won't put you to death with the sword. So now don't hold him guiltless. Because you're a wise man and know what you ought to do to him. But bring his grey head down to the grave with blood. So David died and was buried in the City of David. And the days David ruled over Israel were forty years — seven years he ruled in Hebron, and thirty-three years he ruled in Jerusalem. Then Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was made very firm.

Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man; And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself: That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel. Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace. But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother. And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword. Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood. So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David. And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem. Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.

Adonijah, Abiathar and Joab

Adonijah son of Haggith came to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother. She asked: Have you come in peace? He answered: In peace. Then he said: I've got something to ask you. She replied: Go on. He said: You know the kingdom was mine and all Israel expected me to reign. But things turned around and the kingdom went to my brother, because it was his from the Lord. Now I have one request. Please don't knock me back. She said: Go on. He said: Please speak to King Solomon for me — he won't refuse you — and ask him to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife. Bathsheba said: All right. I'll speak to the king for you. Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him on Adonijah's behalf. The king stood to meet her, bowed to her, then sat on his throne. He had a seat brought for the queen mother, and she sat at his right hand. She said: I have one small request. Please don't refuse me. The king answered: Ask, my mother. I won't refuse you. She said: Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as his wife. King Solomon answered his mother: Why ask for Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You may as well ask for the kingdom for him too. He's my older brother — and Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah are on his side. Then King Solomon swore by the Lord: May God deal with me, ever so severely, if Adonijah hasn't made this request at the cost of his own life. So now, as surely as the Lord lives — the one who established me on my father David's throne and gave me a royal house as he promised — Adonijah will die today. King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and Benaiah struck Adonijah down and killed him. The king told Abiathar the priest: Go back to your fields at Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I won't put you to death today, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David and shared in all my father's troubles. So Solomon removed Abiathar from serving as priest of the Lord, fulfilling what the Lord had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli. When the news reached Joab — who had sided with Adonijah, though not with Absalom — he fled to the tent of the Lord and grabbed the horns of the altar. King Solomon was told: Joab has fled to the tent of the Lord and is there beside the altar. Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada with the order: Go and strike him down. Benaiah went to the tent of the Lord and said: The king says, Come out. Joab answered: No. I'll die here. So Benaiah went back and told the king exactly what Joab had said. The king said: Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him. Remove from me and my father's house the guilt of the innocent blood Joab shed. The Lord will bring his blood back on his own head, because without my father David knowing it he attacked and killed two men more righteous and better than himself: Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel's army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah's army. Their blood will come back on Joab's head and on the heads of his descendants forever. But from the Lord there will be peace forever for David, his descendants, his house and his throne. Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck Joab down and killed him. Joab was buried at his own home in the wilderness. The king put Benaiah son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab's place, and appointed Zadok the priest in Abiathar's place.

And Adonijah son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said: Do you come peacefully? And he said: Peacefully. He said too: I've got something to say to you. And she said: Say on. And he said: You know the kingdom was mine, and all Israel set their faces on me, that I should rule. But the kingdom is turned about and has become my brother's. Because it was his from the Lord. And now I ask one thing of you. Don't say no to me. And she said to him: Say on. And he said: Speak to Solomon the king, please — because he won't say no to you — that he gives me Abishag the Shunammite as a wife. And Bathsheba said: Good. I'll speak for you to the king. So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king got up to meet her and bowed himself to her, and sat down on his throne and had a seat set for the king's mother. And she sat on his right hand. Then she said: I ask one small thing of you. Don't say no to me. And the king said to her: Ask on, my mother, because I won't say no to you. And she said: Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as a wife. And King Solomon answered his mother: And why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask the kingdom for him too, because he's my older brother — for him and for Abiathar the priest and for Joab son of Zeruiah. Then King Solomon swore by the Lord: God do that to me and more, if Adonijah hasn't spoken this word against his own life. So now, as surely as the Lord lives, who's set me up and set me on the throne of David my father and who's made me a house the way he promised, Adonijah will be put to death today. And King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah son of Jehoiada. And he fell on him, so he died. And to Abiathar the priest the king said: Go to Anathoth, to your own fields. Because you deserve death. But I won't put you to death this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord God in front of David my father, and because you were troubled in everything my father was troubled in. So Solomon threw Abiathar out from being priest to the Lord, so he could carry out the word of the Lord that he spoke about the house of Eli in Shiloh. Then the news came to Joab. Because Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he hadn't turned after Absalom. And Joab ran to the tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns of the altar. And King Solomon was told Joab had run to the tent of the Lord, and there he was by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada: Go, fall on him. And Benaiah came to the tent of the Lord and said to him: This is what the king says. Come out. And he said: No, but I'll die here. And Benaiah brought the king word back: Joab said this, and this is what he answered me. And the king said to him: Do the way he's said, and fall on him and bury him, so you can take away the innocent blood Joab spilt from me and from the house of my father. And the Lord will bring his blood back on his own head, who fell on two men more righteous and better than him and killed them with the sword — my father David not knowing about it — Abner son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah. So their blood will come back on the head of Joab and on the head of his offspring forever. But there'll be peace forever from the Lord on David and on his offspring and on his house and on his throne. So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and fell on him and killed him. And he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. And the king put Benaiah son of Jehoiada in his place over the army. And the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.

And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably. He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on. And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD. And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on. And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife. And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king. Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand. Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay. And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife. And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah. Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life. Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day. And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died. And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the LORD God before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted. So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh. Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him. And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me. And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father. And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah. Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD. So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.

King James Version, 1611

Shimei

Then the king summoned Shimei and said: Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and stay there. Don't leave the city to go anywhere else. The day you leave and cross the Kidron brook, you can be certain you'll die. Your blood will be on your own head. Shimei told the king: Fair enough. Your servant will do exactly as my lord the king has said. So Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time. Three years later, two of Shimei's servants ran away to Achish son of Maachah, king of Gath. Shimei was told: Your servants are in Gath. Shimei saddled his donkey and went to Gath to Achish to find his servants. He found them and brought them back from Gath. Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and returned. The king summoned Shimei and said: Didn't I make you swear by the Lord and warn you plainly that the day you left and went anywhere else you would certainly die? And didn't you tell me: What you've said is fair? So why didn't you keep your oath before the Lord and obey the command I gave you? The king also told Shimei: You know in your own heart all the evil you did to my father David. The Lord will bring that evil back on your own head. But King Solomon will be blessed, and David's throne will stand secure before the Lord forever. Then the king gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada. Benaiah went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. So the kingdom was firmly established in Solomon's hands.

And the king sent and called for Shimei and said to him: Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, and don't go out from there anywhere. Because on the day you go out and go over the brook Kidron, know for sure that you'll definitely die. Your blood will be on your own head. And Shimei said to the king: What you say is good. The way my lord the king has said, that's what your servant will do. And Shimei lived in Jerusalem plenty of days. And at the end of three years, two of the servants of Shimei ran away to Achish son of Maakah, king of Gath. And they told Shimei: Look — your servants are in Gath. And Shimei got up and saddled his donkey and went to Gath to Achish, to look for his servants. And Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath. And Solomon was told Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had come back. And the king sent and called for Shimei and said to him: Didn't I make you swear by the Lord and warn you: On the day you go out and walk anywhere, know for sure you'll definitely die? And you said to me: What I've heard is good. So why haven't you kept the oath of the Lord and the order I ordered you? The king said to Shimei too: You know all the wickedness your heart knows about, that you did to David my father. So the Lord will bring your wickedness back on your own head. And King Solomon will be blessed, and the throne of David will be set firm in front of the Lord forever. So the king ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who went out and fell on him, so he died. And the kingdom was made firm in the hand of Solomon.

For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head. And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days. And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath. And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath. And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again. And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the LORD, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good. Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with? The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head; And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.
