Adonijah sets himself up

King David was old and well on in years. They piled blankets over him, but he still couldn't get warm. His servants said: Let us find a young virgin for my lord the king. She can attend you, care for you and lie beside you to keep you warm. So they searched all Israel for a beautiful young woman. They found Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king. The young woman was very beautiful. She cared for the king and attended him, but the king did not sleep with her. Meanwhile Adonijah son of Haggith put himself forward and said: I'll be king. He lined up chariots, horsemen and fifty men to run ahead of him. His father had never pulled him up by asking: Why are you doing this? Adonijah was also a very handsome man, born after Absalom. He had a word with Joab son of Zeruiah and Abiathar the priest, and they threw their support behind him. But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei and David's mighty men did not side with Adonijah. Adonijah sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened beasts at the Stone of Zoheleth near En-rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the royal officials of Judah. But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men or his brother Solomon.

Now King David was old and getting on in years. And they covered him with clothes, but he got no heat. So his servants said to him: Let a young woman be looked for for my lord the king, and let her stand in front of the king and look after him. And let her lie in your chest, so my lord the king can get heat. So they looked for a beautiful young woman through all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. And the young woman was very beautiful and looked after the king and served him. But the king didn't know her. Then Adonijah son of Haggith lifted himself up: I'll be king. And he got himself chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run in front of him. And his father hadn't upset him at any time: Why have you done that? And he was a very good-looking man too. And his mother had him after Absalom. And he talked with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest. And following Adonijah, they helped him. But Zadok the priest and Benaiah son of Jehoiada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and the mighty men who belonged to David weren't with Adonijah. And Adonijah killed sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En Rogel. And he called all his brothers the king's sons and all the men of Judah the king's servants. But he didn't call Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the mighty men or Solomon his brother.

Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat. Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat. So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not. Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom. And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him. But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the king’s servants: But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

Nathan and Bathsheba

Nathan said to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother: Haven't you heard? Adonijah son of Haggith has made himself king, and our lord David doesn't even know about it. Now listen. Let me give you some advice that may save both your life and your son Solomon's. Go straight in to King David and say: My lord the king, didn't you swear to your servant that my son Solomon would rule after you and sit on your throne? So why is Adonijah king? While you're still speaking with the king, I'll come in behind you and back up what you've said. Bathsheba went into the king's room. The king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending him. Bathsheba bowed low before the king. He asked: What is it you want? She answered: My lord, you swore to your servant by the Lord your God: Your son Solomon will rule after me, and he will sit on my throne. But now Adonijah has made himself king, and you, my lord the king, don't know a thing about it. He's sacrificed cattle, fattened beasts and plenty of sheep, and invited all the king's sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab commander of the army. But he hasn't invited your servant Solomon. My lord the king, all Israel is looking to you to tell them who will sit on your throne after you. Otherwise, once my lord the king dies and joins his ancestors, my son Solomon and I will be treated as offenders. While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. The king was told: Nathan the prophet is here. Nathan came before the king and bowed with his face to the ground. Nathan said: My lord the king, have you declared that Adonijah will rule after you and sit on your throne? Because today he's gone down and sacrificed cattle, fattened beasts and plenty of sheep. He's invited all the king's sons, the army commanders and Abiathar the priest. They're eating and drinking with him and shouting: Long live King Adonijah! But he hasn't invited me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada or your servant Solomon. Has my lord the king authorised this without telling your servants who is meant to sit on your throne after you? King David answered: Call Bathsheba back in. She came and stood before the king. The king swore: As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me from every trouble, just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel that your son Solomon would rule after me and sit on my throne in my place, I will make it happen today. Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground before the king and said: May my lord King David live forever.

So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon: Haven't you heard that Adonijah son of Haggith rules, and David our lord doesn't know it? So come now, let me give you counsel, please, so you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. Go and get in to King David and say to him: Didn't you, my lord king, swear to your servant: Solomon your son will definitely rule after me, and he'll sit on my throne? So why does Adonijah rule? Look — while you're still talking there with the king, I'll come in after you and back up your words. And Bathsheba went in to the king into the room. And the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite served the king. And Bathsheba bowed and bowed down to the king. And the king said: What do you want? And she said to him: My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your servant: Solomon your son will definitely rule after me, and he'll sit on my throne. And now look — Adonijah rules. And now, my lord king, you don't know it. And he's killed oxen and fat cattle and sheep in plenty, and has called all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest and Joab the captain of the army. But he hasn't called Solomon your servant. And you, my lord king — the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who'll sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. Otherwise, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as wrongdoers. And look — while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in too. And they told the king: Look — Nathan the prophet. And when he'd come in in front of the king, he bowed himself in front of the king with his face to the ground. And Nathan said: My lord king, have you said: Adonijah will rule after me, and he'll sit on my throne? Because he's gone down today and has killed oxen and fat cattle and sheep in plenty, and has called all the king's sons and the captains of the army and Abiathar the priest. And look — they eat and drink in front of him and say: God save King Adonijah. But he hasn't called me, me your servant, and Zadok the priest and Benaiah son of Jehoiada and your servant Solomon. Is this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven't shown it to your servant who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him? Then King David answered: Call me Bathsheba. And she came in in front of the king and stood in front of the king. And the king swore: As surely as the Lord lives, who's bought back my soul out of all trouble — the way I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel: Solomon your son will definitely rule after me and he'll sit on my throne in my place, that's what I'll definitely do today. Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and bowed down to the king: Let my lord King David live forever.

Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not? Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon. Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign? Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words. And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king. And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou? And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not: And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called. And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders. And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah. But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called. Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him? Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king. And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress, Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day. Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.

Solomon anointed

King David said: Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada. They came before the king. The king told them: Take my servants with you. Put my son Solomon on my own mule and take him down to Gihon. There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout: Long live King Solomon! Then follow him back up. He will come and sit on my throne and reign in my place, because I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah. Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king: Amen. May the Lord God of my lord the king say the same. Just as the Lord was with my lord the king, may he be with Solomon and make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David. So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down, put Solomon on King David's mule and took him to Gihon. Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet, and all the people shouted: Long live King Solomon! The whole crowd followed him back up, playing pipes and carrying on with such joy that the ground shook with the noise. Adonijah and all his guests heard it just as they finished eating. When Joab heard the trumpet he said: What's all that racket in the city? While he was still speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said: Come in. You're a good man; surely you've brought good news. Jonathan answered: Not exactly. Our lord King David has made Solomon king. The king sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites and the Pelethites with him, and they put him on the king's own mule. Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed him king at Gihon. They've come back up celebrating, and the whole city is in an uproar. That's the noise you heard. And Solomon is already sitting on the royal throne. The king's servants have also come to congratulate our lord King David, saying: May God make Solomon's name greater than yours and his throne greater than yours. The king bowed in worship on his bed. And the king said: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has given someone to sit on my throne today and let me see it with my own eyes. That put the wind up all Adonijah's guests. They got to their feet and scattered in every direction. Adonijah himself was terrified of Solomon. He went and grabbed hold of the horns of the altar. Solomon was told: Adonijah is frightened of King Solomon and has grabbed the horns of the altar. He says, Let King Solomon swear to me today that he won't kill his servant with the sword. Solomon said: If he proves himself a worthy man, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground. But if wickedness is found in him, he will die. King Solomon sent men to bring him down from the altar. Adonijah came and bowed before King Solomon, and Solomon told him: Go home.

And King David said: Call me Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada. And they came in front of the king. The king said to them too: Take the servants of your lord with you and make Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon. And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel there. And blow the trumpet and say: God save King Solomon. Then you'll come up after him, so he can come and sit on my throne. Because he'll be king in my place. And I've ordered him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah. And Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king: Amen. The Lord God of my lord the king say the same. The way the Lord has been with my lord the king, that's how he'll be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David. So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada and the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and made Solomon ride on King David's mule, and brought him to Gihon. And Zadok the priest took a horn of oil out of the tent and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet. And all the people said: God save King Solomon. And all the people came up after him, and the people played pipes and celebrated with great joy, so the earth split with the sound of them. And Adonijah and all who were with him heard it as they'd finished eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said: Why is there this noise of the town in an uproar? And while he was still speaking, there came Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest. And Adonijah said to him: Come in, because you're a brave man and bring good news. And Jonathan answered Adonijah: Truly our lord King David has made Solomon king. And the king has sent with him Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada and the Kerethites and the Pelethites. And they've made him ride on the king's mule. And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. And they've come up from there celebrating, so the town rang again. This is the noise you've heard. And Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom too. And what's more, the king's servants came to bless our lord King David: God make the name of Solomon better than your name and make his throne greater than your throne. And the king bowed himself on the bed. And the king said this too: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who's given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes seeing it. And all the ones who were asked with Adonijah were afraid, and got up and went every man his way. And Adonijah was frightened because of Solomon, and got up and went and took hold of the horns of the altar. And Solomon was told: Look — Adonijah is frightened of King Solomon. Because look, he's taken hold of the horns of the altar: Let King Solomon swear to me today that he won't kill his servant with the sword. And Solomon said: If he'll show himself a worthy man, not one hair of his will fall to the earth. But if wickedness is found in him, he'll die. So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed down to King Solomon. And Solomon said to him: Go to your house.

And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings. And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
