The sons of God

Look what sort of love the Father has given us, that we should be called the sons of God. The world does not know us because it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are the sons of God, and what we will be has not yet appeared. But we know that when he appears we will be like him, because we will see him as he is. And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure. Everyone who sins breaks the law, because sin is breaking the law. And you know he appeared to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. Whoever lives in him does not sin. Whoever sins has not seen him or known him. Little children, don't let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, as he is righteous. The one who commits sin is of the devil, because the devil sins from the beginning. This is why the Son of God appeared: to destroy the devil's works. Whoever is born of God does not commit sin, because God's seed remains in him. He cannot sin, because he has been born of God. This is how you tell the children of God from the children of the devil: anyone who doesn't do what is right is not of God, and neither is anyone who doesn't love his brother.

Look what kind of love the Father has given us, that we should be called the sons of God. So the world doesn't know us, because it didn't know him. Beloved, now we're the sons of God. And it doesn't yet show what we'll be. But we know that when he shows himself, we'll be like him. Because we'll see him as he is. And every man who's got this hope in him cleans himself, the way he's pure. Whoever does sin breaks the teaching too. Because sin is the breaking of the teaching. And you know he was made plain to take away our sins. And in him is no sin. Whoever stays in him doesn't sin. Whoever sins hasn't seen him or known him. Little children, let no man take you in. The one who does righteousness is righteous, the way he's righteous. The one who does sin is of the devil. Because the devil sins from the beginning. For this reason the Son of God was made plain, to wreck the works of the devil. Whoever's born of God doesn't do sin. Because his seed stays in him. And he can't sin, because he's born of God. In this the children of God are plain, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn't do righteousness isn't of God, and neither is the one who doesn't love his brother.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Love each other

Because this is the message you heard from the beginning: that we should love one another. Not like Cain, who was of that wicked one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil and his brother's were righteous. Don't be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you. We know we have passed from death to life because we love the brothers. Anyone who does not love his brother stays in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. This is how we know the love of God: he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need and shuts his heart against him, how can the love of God be in him? My little children, let us not love in word or talk, but in what we do and in truth. This is how we know we are of the truth, and will assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Dear friends, if our hearts don't condemn us, we have confidence before God, and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he commanded us. The one who keeps his commandments lives in him, and he in him. And this is how we know he lives in us: by the Spirit he gave us.

Because this is the message you heard from the beginning, that we should love each other. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil and his brother's righteous. Don't be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. We know we've passed from death to life, because we love the brothers. The one who doesn't love his brother stays in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has everlasting life staying in him. By this we know the love of God, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But whoever has this world's goods and sees his brother in need and shuts up his tender feelings from him, how does the love of God stay in him? My little children, let's not love in word or in tongue but in deed and in truth. And by this we know we're of the truth and will make our hearts sure in front of him. Because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows everything. Beloved, if our heart doesn't condemn us, then we've got confidence towards God. And whatever we ask, we get of him, because we keep his orders and do the things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his order — that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love each other, the way he gave us the order. And the one who keeps his orders lives in him and he in him. And by this we know he stays in us, by the Spirit he's given us.

For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
