The Word of life
What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our own eyes, what we looked at and our hands have handled — of the Word of life. The life appeared, and we have seen it, and we bear witness, and we tell you of that eternal life which was with the Father and appeared to us. What we have seen and heard we tell you, so that you can share this life with us. And the life we share is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we write this so your joy may be complete.
What was from the beginning, what we've heard, what we've seen with our eyes, what we've looked at and our hands have handled, of the Word of life. (Because the life was made plain, and we've seen it and bear witness and show you that everlasting life, that was with the Father and was made plain to us.) What we've seen and heard we tell you, so you can have fellowship with us too. And truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. God is light
This is the message we heard from him and pass on to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say we share with him and go on walking in the darkness, we are lying and not living by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we share with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar, and his word is not in us.
This then is the message we've heard of him and tell you — that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we've got fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie and don't do the truth. But if we walk in the light, the way he's in the light, we've got fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleans us from all sin. If we say we've got no sin, we take ourselves in and the truth isn't in us. If we own up our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to clean us from all unrighteousness. If we say we haven't sinned, we make him a liar and his word isn't in us.
