Heads covered

Follow my lead, just as I follow Christ. Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in everything and hold to the traditions just as I handed them to you. But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonours his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head. It is exactly as though her head were shaved. Because if a woman isn't covered, let her be shorn as well. But if it is a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaved, then let her be covered. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. Because the man didn't come from the woman, but the woman from the man. And the man wasn't created for the woman, but the woman for the man. For this reason the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels. Even so, in the Lord the man isn't independent of the woman, and the woman isn't independent of the man. Because just as the woman came from the man, so the man comes through the woman. And everything comes from God. Judge for yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Doesn't nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a shame to him, but if a woman has long hair it is a glory to her? Because her hair was given her as a covering. But if anyone wants to argue about it, we have no such practice, and neither do the churches of God.

Be followers of me, the way I am too of Christ. Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in everything and keep the ways the way I handed them to you. But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered dishonours his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head. Because that's the same as if she were shaved. Because if the woman isn't covered, let her be shorn too. But if it's a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. Because a man truly ought not to cover his head, since he's the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. Because the man isn't of the woman, but the woman of the man. And the man wasn't created for the woman, but the woman for the man. For this reason the woman ought to have power on her head, because of the angels. But still the man isn't without the woman, and the woman isn't without the man, in the Lord. Because the way the woman is of the man, that's how the man is by the woman too. But everything is of God. Judge among yourselves. Is it fitting that a woman prays to God uncovered? Doesn't nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it's a shame to him? But if a woman has long hair, it's a glory to her. Because her hair is given her for a covering. But if any man seems to be argumentative, we've got no such custom, and neither have the churches of God.

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Plain English

But still the man isn't without the woman, and the woman isn't without the man, in the Lord.

King James Version, 1611

Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12

Because just as the woman came from the man, so the man comes through the woman. And everything comes from God.

Plain English

Because the way the woman is of the man, that's how the man is by the woman too. But everything is of God.

King James Version, 1611

For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

13

Judge among yourselves. Is it fitting that a woman prays to God uncovered?

King James Version, 1611

But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

The Lord's supper

Now in giving you these instructions I don't praise you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. In the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear there are divisions among you — and I partly believe it. Because there have to be factions among you, so those who are approved may be shown up among you. So when you come together in one place, it isn't the Lord's Supper you are eating. Because as you eat, each of you gets on with his own supper ahead of the others. One goes hungry and another gets drunk. What? Haven't you got houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Should I praise you in this? I don't praise you. Because I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread. And when he had given thanks he broke it and said, Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Because as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. So whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. So let a man examine himself, and then let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. Because the man who eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks judgement on himself, not discerning the Lord's body. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and many have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves properly, we wouldn't be judged. And when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord, so we won't be condemned along with the world. So my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. And if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that when you come together it isn't for judgement. And I will set the rest in order when I come.

Now in what I say to you I don't praise you — that you come together not for the better but for the worse. Because first of all, when you come together in the church, I hear there are divisions among you. And I partly believe it. Because there have to be groups among you too, so the ones who are approved can be made plain among you. So when you come together into one place, this isn't to eat the Lord's supper. Because in eating every one takes before the others his own supper. And one is hungry and another is drunk. What? Haven't you got houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on the church of God and shame the ones who haven't got anything? What'll I say to you? Should I praise you in this? I don't praise you. Because I've got of the Lord what I handed to you too — that the Lord Jesus, the same night he was handed over, took bread. And when he'd given thanks, he broke it and said: Take, eat. This is my body, that's broken for you. Do this in memory of me. The same way he took the cup too, when he'd eaten, and said: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in memory of me. Because as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you show the Lord's death till he comes. So whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. Because the one who eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks condemning to himself, not telling the Lord's body apart. For this reason plenty are weak and sick among you, and plenty sleep. Because if we'd judge ourselves, we wouldn't be judged. But when we're judged, we're set straight by the Lord, so we shouldn't be condemned with the world. So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. And if any man is hungry, let him eat at home, so you don't come together to condemning. And the rest I'll set in order when I come.

Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

17

Now in giving you these instructions I don't praise you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.

Plain English

Now in what I say to you I don't praise you — that you come together not for the better but for the worse.

King James Version, 1611

Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

18

In the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear there are divisions among you — and I partly believe it.

Plain English

Because first of all, when you come together in the church, I hear there are divisions among you. And I partly believe it.

King James Version, 1611

For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

19

Because there have to be factions among you, so those who are approved may be shown up among you.

Plain English

Because there have to be groups among you too, so the ones who are approved can be made plain among you.

King James Version, 1611

For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

20

So when you come together in one place, it isn't the Lord's Supper you are eating.

Plain English

So when you come together into one place, this isn't to eat the Lord's supper.

King James Version, 1611

When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.

21

Because as you eat, each of you gets on with his own supper ahead of the others. One goes hungry and another gets drunk.

Plain English

Because in eating every one takes before the others his own supper. And one is hungry and another is drunk.

King James Version, 1611

For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

22

What? Haven't you got houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Should I praise you in this? I don't praise you.

Plain English

What? Haven't you got houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on the church of God and shame the ones who haven't got anything? What'll I say to you? Should I praise you in this? I don't praise you.

King James Version, 1611

What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

23

Because I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread.

Plain English

Because I've got of the Lord what I handed to you too — that the Lord Jesus, the same night he was handed over, took bread.

King James Version, 1611

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24

And when he had given thanks he broke it and said, Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

Plain English

And when he'd given thanks, he broke it and said: Take, eat. This is my body, that's broken for you. Do this in memory of me.

King James Version, 1611

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25

In the same way he took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Plain English

The same way he took the cup too, when he'd eaten, and said: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in memory of me.

King James Version, 1611

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26

Because as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

Plain English

Because as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you show the Lord's death till he comes.

King James Version, 1611

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

27

So whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

King James Version, 1611

Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28

So let a man examine himself, and then let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

Plain English

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup.

King James Version, 1611

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29

Because the man who eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks judgement on himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Plain English

Because the one who eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks condemning to himself, not telling the Lord's body apart.

King James Version, 1611

For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

30

That is why many among you are weak and sick, and many have fallen asleep.

Plain English

For this reason plenty are weak and sick among you, and plenty sleep.

King James Version, 1611

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

31

But if we judged ourselves properly, we wouldn't be judged.

Plain English

Because if we'd judge ourselves, we wouldn't be judged.

King James Version, 1611

For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

32

And when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord, so we won't be condemned along with the world.

Plain English

But when we're judged, we're set straight by the Lord, so we shouldn't be condemned with the world.

King James Version, 1611

But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

33

So my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

Plain English

So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other.

King James Version, 1611

Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

34

And if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that when you come together it isn't for judgement. And I will set the rest in order when I come.

Plain English

And if any man is hungry, let him eat at home, so you don't come together to condemning. And the rest I'll set in order when I come.

King James Version, 1611

And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
