Warnings from the wilderness

Now I don't want you in the dark, brothers, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptised into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. Because they drank from that spiritual rock that went with them, and that rock was Christ. But God wasn't pleased with most of them, and they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things happened as examples for us, so we wouldn't crave evil things as they did. And don't be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play. And let us not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them fell. And let us not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by snakes. And don't grumble, as some of them grumbled, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written down as a warning for us, on whom the ends of the world have come. So let the man who thinks he is standing watch out that he doesn't fall. No temptation has taken hold of you except what is common to man. And God is faithful. He won't let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But with the temptation he will also make a way out, so you can stand up under it.

What's more, brothers, I don't want you to be without knowing how all our fathers were under the cloud and all went through the sea. And were all baptised into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. And all ate the same spiritual food. And all drank the same spiritual drink. Because they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. But with plenty of them God wasn't well pleased. Because they were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, so we shouldn't want evil things the way they wanted them too. And don't be idol worshippers, the way some of them were. As it's written: The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to play. And let's not sin sexually, the way some of them did and fell in one day twenty-three thousand. And let's not test Christ, the way some of them tested too and were wrecked by snakes. And don't grumble, the way some of them grumbled too and were wrecked by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples. And they're written to warn us, who the ends of the world have come on. So let the one who thinks he stands take care he doesn't fall. No testing has taken you except what's common to man. But God is faithful, who won't let you be tested above what you're able. But with the testing will make a way to get out too, so you can be able to bear it.

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The cup of the Lord

So my dearly loved friends, run from idolatry. I am speaking to sensible people. Judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless — isn't it a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break — isn't it a sharing in the body of Christ? Because we, being many, are one loaf and one body, since we all share in that one loaf. Look at Israel after the flesh. Aren't those who eat the sacrifices sharing in the altar? What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or that food offered to an idol is anything? No — but that what the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. And I don't want you sharing with demons. You can't drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can't share in the Lord's table and the table of demons. Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he is?

So, my dearly beloved, run from idol worship. I speak as to wise men. You judge what I say. The cup of blessing we bless, isn't it the sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread we break, isn't it the sharing of the body of Christ? Because we being plenty are one bread and one body. Because we're all partakers of that one bread. Look at Israel after the flesh. Aren't the ones who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? So what do I say then? That the idol is anything, or that what's offered to idols is anything? But I say that the things the nations sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. And I don't want you to have fellowship with demons. You can't drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can't be partakers of the Lord's table and of the table of demons. Do we make the Lord jealous? Are we stronger than him?

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

14

So my dearly loved friends, run from idolatry.

Plain English

So, my dearly beloved, run from idol worship.

King James Version, 1611

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

15

I am speaking to sensible people. Judge for yourselves what I say.

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

Because we, being many, are one loaf and one body, since we all share in that one loaf.

Plain English

Because we being plenty are one bread and one body. Because we're all partakers of that one bread.

King James Version, 1611

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

18

Look at Israel after the flesh. Aren't those who eat the sacrifices sharing in the altar?

King James Version, 1611

20

No — but that what the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. And I don't want you sharing with demons.

Plain English

But I say that the things the nations sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. And I don't want you to have fellowship with demons.

King James Version, 1611

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

King James Version, 1611

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

22

Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he is?

Plain English

Do we make the Lord jealous? Are we stronger than him?

King James Version, 1611

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

Do everything to God's glory

Everything is lawful, but not everything is good for us. Everything is lawful, but not everything builds up. Let nobody look out only for himself, but for the good of the other man. Eat whatever is sold at the meat market, without asking questions for conscience' sake. Because the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put in front of you, without asking questions for conscience' sake. But if anyone says to you, This was offered in sacrifice to idols, then don't eat it — for the sake of the man who told you, and for conscience' sake. Because the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness. I mean his conscience, not yours. Because why should my freedom be judged by another man's conscience? If I take part with thankfulness, why am I spoken against for something I give thanks for? So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God. Give no offence to Jews or Gentiles or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything, not looking for my own good but for the good of many, so they may be saved.

Everything is lawful for me, but everything isn't useful. Everything is lawful for me, but everything doesn't build up. Let no man look for his own, but every man another's good. Whatever is sold in the market, eat, asking no question for conscience' sake. Because the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. If any of the ones who don't believe asks you to a feast and you want to go, eat whatever is set in front of you, asking no question for conscience' sake. But if any man says to you: This is offered as a sacrifice to idols — don't eat, for the sake of the one who showed it and for conscience' sake. Because the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. I say conscience, not your own but the other's. Because why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience? Because if I by grace am a partaker, why am I spoken evil of for what I give thanks for? So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God. Don't give offence, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God. The way I please all men in everything, not looking for my own profit but the profit of plenty, so they can be saved.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth. Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof: Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience? For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

23

Everything is lawful, but not everything is good for us. Everything is lawful, but not everything builds up.

Plain English

Everything is lawful for me, but everything isn't useful. Everything is lawful for me, but everything doesn't build up.

King James Version, 1611

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

24

Let nobody look out only for himself, but for the good of the other man.

Plain English

Let no man look for his own, but every man another's good.

King James Version, 1611

Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.

25

Eat whatever is sold at the meat market, without asking questions for conscience' sake.

Plain English

Whatever is sold in the market, eat, asking no question for conscience' sake.

King James Version, 1611

Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

26

Because the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.

King James Version, 1611

For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.

27

If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put in front of you, without asking questions for conscience' sake.

Plain English

If any of the ones who don't believe asks you to a feast and you want to go, eat whatever is set in front of you, asking no question for conscience' sake.

King James Version, 1611

If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

28

But if anyone says to you, This was offered in sacrifice to idols, then don't eat it — for the sake of the man who told you, and for conscience' sake. Because the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness.

Plain English

But if any man says to you: This is offered as a sacrifice to idols — don't eat, for the sake of the one who showed it and for conscience' sake. Because the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.

King James Version, 1611

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof:

29

I mean his conscience, not yours. Because why should my freedom be judged by another man's conscience?

Plain English

I say conscience, not your own but the other's. Because why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience?

King James Version, 1611

Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience?

30

If I take part with thankfulness, why am I spoken against for something I give thanks for?

Plain English

Because if I by grace am a partaker, why am I spoken evil of for what I give thanks for?

King James Version, 1611

For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

31

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

Plain English

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God.

King James Version, 1611

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

32

Give no offence to Jews or Gentiles or to the church of God,

Plain English

Don't give offence, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God.

King James Version, 1611

Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

33

just as I try to please everyone in everything, not looking for my own good but for the good of many, so they may be saved.

Plain English

The way I please all men in everything, not looking for my own profit but the profit of plenty, so they can be saved.

King James Version, 1611

Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
