At the gate
Then Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. And along came the relative he had spoken about. Boaz said, You there — come over and sit down here. So he came over and sat down. And Boaz took ten of the town's elders and said, Sit down here. And they sat down. Then he said to the relative, Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech. And I thought I would let you know about it, and say: buy it, in front of the people sitting here and in front of the elders. If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you won't, tell me straight, so I know — because there is nobody to redeem it but you, and I am next after you. And he said, I will redeem it. Then Boaz said, The day you buy the field from Naomi, you also take on Ruth the Moabite, the dead man's wife, to keep the dead man's name on his inheritance. And the relative said, Then I can't redeem it — I would be doing my own inheritance harm. You take my right of redemption. I can't do it. And Ruth the Moabite as well, Mahlon's wife, I have taken to be my wife, to keep the dead man's name on his inheritance, so his name won't be cut off from among his brothers or from the gate of his town. You are witnesses today. And all the people at the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman coming into your house like Rachel and like Leah, the two who built up the people of Israel. And may you do worthily in Ephratah and make a name for yourself in Bethlehem. And may your house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman.

Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. And the relative said, Then I can't redeem it — I would be doing my own inheritance harm. You take my right of redemption. I can't do it.

And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you today without a redeemer. May his name be famous in Israel. He will bring your life back to you and look after you in your old age. Because your daughter-in-law, who loves you, and who has been better to you than seven sons, has borne him. And Naomi took the child, held him to her, and became his nurse. And the women in the neighbourhood gave him a name. There is a son born to Naomi, they said. And they called him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David. Now these are the generations of Pharez. Pharez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered Ram, and Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon, and Salmon fathered Boaz, and Boaz fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.
