Life in the Spirit

So there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law couldn't do, weakened as it was by the flesh, God did: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and as a sin offering, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who don't walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Because those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh. But those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death. But the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God. It doesn't submit to the law of God, and it can't. So those who are in the flesh can't please God. But you aren't in the flesh. You are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone doesn't have the Spirit of Christ, he doesn't belong to him. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then the one who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you. So then, brothers, we are in debt — but not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. Because if you live according to the flesh, you will die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. Because you didn't receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. You received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if in fact we suffer with him, so we may also be glorified with him.

So there's now no condemning to the ones in Christ Jesus, who don't walk after the flesh but after the Spirit. Because the rule of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the rule of sin and death. Because what the teaching couldn't do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, and condemned sin in the flesh. So the righteousness of the teaching could be carried out in us, who don't walk after the flesh but after the Spirit. Because the ones who are after the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh. But the ones who are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. Because to be of the mind of the flesh is death. But to be of the mind of the Spirit is life and peace. Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God. Because it isn't under the teaching of God, and it can't be. So the ones in the flesh can't please God. But you aren't in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if any man hasn't got the Spirit of Christ, he isn't his. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin. But the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of the one who raised up Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised up Christ from the dead will make your bodies that die alive too by his Spirit that lives in you. So then, brothers, we're in debt — not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. Because if you live after the flesh, you'll die. But if through the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you'll live. Because as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they're the sons of God. Because you haven't got the spirit of bondage again to fear. But you've got the Spirit of taking in as sons, that we cry by: Abba, Father. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we're the children of God. And if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if it's so that we suffer with him, so we can be glorified together too.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

King James Version, 1611

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

The creation groans

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time aren't worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Because creation waits with eager longing for the sons of God to be revealed. For creation was subjected to futility, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it — in hope, that creation itself will be set free from its slavery to decay, into the glorious freedom of the children of God. Because we know that the whole creation groans and labours in pain together until now. And not only creation, but we ourselves as well, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit. We groan inwardly, waiting for adoption — the redemption of our body. Because we were saved in hope. But hope that is seen isn't hope. Who hopes for what he can already see? But if we hope for what we don't see, then we wait for it with patience. And in the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Because we don't know what we ought to pray for. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that can't be put into words. And the one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Because I reckon the sufferings of this present time aren't worth comparing with the glory that'll be shown in us. Because the deep longing of the creation waits for the showing of the sons of God. Because the creation was made subject to emptiness, not willingly but because of the one who put it under, in hope. Because the creation itself will be set free too from the bondage of rotting into the glorious freedom of the children of God. Because we know the whole creation groans and is in pain together right till now. And not only they, but we ourselves too, who've got the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan in ourselves, waiting for the taking in as sons, that is, the buying back of our body. Because we're saved by hope. But hope that's seen isn't hope. Because what a man sees, why does he still hope for it? But if we hope for what we don't see, then we wait for it with patience. The Spirit helps our weaknesses the same way too. Because we don't know what we should pray for the way we ought. But the Spirit himself asks for us with groanings that can't be spoken. And the one who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because he asks for the holy ones according to the will of God.

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

18

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time aren't worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Plain English

Because I reckon the sufferings of this present time aren't worth comparing with the glory that'll be shown in us.

King James Version, 1611

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

19

Because creation waits with eager longing for the sons of God to be revealed.

Plain English

Because the deep longing of the creation waits for the showing of the sons of God.

King James Version, 1611

For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

20

For creation was subjected to futility, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it — in hope,

Plain English

Because the creation was made subject to emptiness, not willingly but because of the one who put it under, in hope.

King James Version, 1611

For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

21

that creation itself will be set free from its slavery to decay, into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

Plain English

Because the creation itself will be set free too from the bondage of rotting into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

King James Version, 1611

Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

22

Because we know that the whole creation groans and labours in pain together until now.

Plain English

Because we know the whole creation groans and is in pain together right till now.

King James Version, 1611

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

23

And not only creation, but we ourselves as well, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit. We groan inwardly, waiting for adoption — the redemption of our body.

Plain English

And not only they, but we ourselves too, who've got the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan in ourselves, waiting for the taking in as sons, that is, the buying back of our body.

King James Version, 1611

And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

24

Because we were saved in hope. But hope that is seen isn't hope. Who hopes for what he can already see?

Plain English

Because we're saved by hope. But hope that's seen isn't hope. Because what a man sees, why does he still hope for it?

King James Version, 1611

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

25

But if we hope for what we don't see, then we wait for it with patience.

King James Version, 1611

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

26

And in the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Because we don't know what we ought to pray for. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that can't be put into words.

Plain English

The Spirit helps our weaknesses the same way too. Because we don't know what we should pray for the way we ought. But the Spirit himself asks for us with groanings that can't be spoken.

King James Version, 1611

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27

And the one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Plain English

And the one who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because he asks for the holy ones according to the will of God.

King James Version, 1611

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Nothing can part us

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Because those he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called. And those he called, he also justified. And those he justified, he also glorified. What should we say then to all this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who didn't spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all — how will he not also, along with him, freely give us everything? Who will bring any charge against God's chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? It is Christ who died — and more than that, who was raised again, who is at the right hand of God, and who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger or the sword? As it is written: For your sake we are killed all day long. We are counted as sheep for the slaughter. No — in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And we know that everything works together for good to the ones who love God, to the ones who are called according to his purpose. Because the ones he knew before, he set out too to be shaped like the image of his Son, so he could be the firstborn among plenty of brothers. What's more, the ones he set out before, them he called too. And the ones he called, them he made right too. And the ones he made right, them he glorified too. So what'll we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who didn't spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how won't he with him freely give us everything too? Who'll lay anything to the charge of God's chosen ones? It's God who makes right. Who is the one who condemns? It's Christ who died, yes rather, who's risen again, who's at the right hand of God too, who asks for us too. Who'll part us from the love of Christ? Trouble or hardship or chasing or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it's written: For your sake we're killed all day long. We're counted as sheep for the killing. No, in all these things we're more than winners through the one who loved us. Because I'm sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor powers nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth nor any other created thing will be able to part us from the love of God that's in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

28

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

Plain English

And we know that everything works together for good to the ones who love God, to the ones who are called according to his purpose.

King James Version, 1611

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30

And those he predestined, he also called. And those he called, he also justified. And those he justified, he also glorified.

Plain English

What's more, the ones he set out before, them he called too. And the ones he called, them he made right too. And the ones he made right, them he glorified too.

King James Version, 1611

Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

31

What should we say then to all this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Plain English

So what'll we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

King James Version, 1611

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

32

He who didn't spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all — how will he not also, along with him, freely give us everything?

Plain English

He who didn't spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how won't he with him freely give us everything too?

King James Version, 1611

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33

Who will bring any charge against God's chosen? It is God who justifies.

Plain English

Who'll lay anything to the charge of God's chosen ones? It's God who makes right.

King James Version, 1611

Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.

34

Who is he that condemns? It is Christ who died — and more than that, who was raised again, who is at the right hand of God, and who also intercedes for us.

Plain English

Who is the one who condemns? It's Christ who died, yes rather, who's risen again, who's at the right hand of God too, who asks for us too.

King James Version, 1611

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

35

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger or the sword?

Plain English

Who'll part us from the love of Christ? Trouble or hardship or chasing or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

King James Version, 1611

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36

As it is written: For your sake we are killed all day long. We are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

Plain English

As it's written: For your sake we're killed all day long. We're counted as sheep for the killing.

King James Version, 1611

As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37

No — in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Plain English

No, in all these things we're more than winners through the one who loved us.

King James Version, 1611

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers nor powers, neither things present nor things to come,

Plain English

Because I'm sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor powers nor things present nor things to come,

King James Version, 1611

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39

neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Plain English

nor height nor depth nor any other created thing will be able to part us from the love of God that's in Christ Jesus our Lord.

King James Version, 1611

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
