Israel's zeal without knowledge

Brothers, my heart's desire and my prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. Because I can testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Since they didn't know the righteousness of God, and set about establishing their own, they didn't submit to the righteousness of God. Because Christ is the end of the law, so there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Moses describes the righteousness that is by the law: The man who does those things will live by them. But the righteousness that is by faith says this: Don't say in your heart, Who will go up into heaven? — that is, to bring Christ down. Or, Who will go down into the deep? — that is, to bring Christ up again from the dead. But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. That is the word of faith we preach: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Because with the heart a man believes and is made righteous, and with the mouth confession is made and he is saved. For the scripture says: Whoever believes in him won't be put to shame. Because there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek. The same Lord is Lord over all, and he is rich toward everyone who calls on him. For whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they could be saved. Because I bear them witness that they've got a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Because being ignorant of God's righteousness and going about to set up their own righteousness, they haven't put themselves under the righteousness of God. Because Christ is the end of the teaching for righteousness to everyone who believes. Because Moses describes the righteousness that's of the teaching, that the man who does those things will live by them. But the righteousness that's of faith speaks like this: Don't say in your heart: Who'll go up into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above). Or: Who'll go down into the deep? (that is, to bring Christ up again from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. That's the word of faith we preach. Because if you'll own up with your mouth the Lord Jesus and will believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you'll be saved. Because with the heart man believes to righteousness. And with the mouth owning up is made to salvation. Because the scripture says: Whoever believes in him won't be put to shame. Because there's no difference between the Jew and the Greek. Because the same Lord over all is rich to everyone who calls on him. Because whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

How will they hear?

But how are they to call on him if they haven't believed in him? And how are they to believe in him if they haven't heard of him? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how is anyone to preach unless he is sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the gospel of peace, and bring good news of good things. But not everyone has obeyed the gospel. Because Esaias says: Lord, who has believed our report? So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I ask: didn't they hear? Of course they did. Their sound went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. But I ask again: didn't Israel know? First Moses says: I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation. By a foolish nation I will make you angry. And Esaias is very bold and says: I was found by those who weren't looking for me. I made myself known to those who weren't asking for me. But about Israel he says: All day long I have stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.

How then will they call on him they haven't believed in? And how will they believe in him they haven't heard of? And how will they hear without a preacher? And how will they preach unless they're sent? As it's written: How beautiful are the feet of the ones who preach the good news of peace and bring glad tidings of good things. But they haven't all obeyed the good news. Because Isaiah says: Lord, who's believed our report? So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, haven't they heard? Yes truly, their sound went into all the earth and their words to the ends of the world. But I say, didn't Israel know? First Moses says: I'll make you jealous by ones who aren't a people, and by a foolish nation I'll make you angry. But Isaiah is very bold and says: I was found by the ones who didn't look for me. I was made known to the ones who didn't ask after me. But to Israel he says: All day long I've stretched out my hands to a people who won't obey and answer back.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

14

But how are they to call on him if they haven't believed in him? And how are they to believe in him if they haven't heard of him? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

King James Version, 1611

And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
