Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God — the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, about his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who as to his human descent came from the line of David, and was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through him we received grace and apostleship, to bring about obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name's sake. And you are among them, called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the good news of God, that he'd promised before by his prophets in the holy scriptures, about his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was made of the offspring of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the rising again from the dead. By him we've got grace and apostleship, to bring about obedience to the faith among all nations for his name. Among them you're called of Jesus Christ too. To everyone in Rome, beloved of God, called to be holy ones: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul's longing to come

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is spoken of all over the world. God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that I never stop mentioning you in my prayers, asking that somehow, by God's will, the way may at last be opened for me to come to you. Because I long to see you, so I can share some spiritual gift with you to strengthen you — or rather, so that you and I can encourage each other by the faith we share. Now I don't want you in the dark, brothers, that I have often planned to come to you, and have been prevented so far, so that I might have some fruit among you as well as among the other nations. I am in debt both to Greeks and to foreigners, both to the wise and to the simple. So as far as it is up to me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you in Rome as well. Because I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes — to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Because in it the righteousness of God is revealed, from faith to faith. As it is written: The just will live by faith.

First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of through the whole world. Because God is my witness, who I serve with my spirit in the good news of his Son, that without stopping I always mention you in my prayers. Asking, if by any means now at last I could have a good journey by the will of God to come to you. Because I long to see you, so I can share with you some spiritual gift, so you can be made strong. That is, so I can be comforted together with you by the faith we have in each other, both yours and mine. Now I don't want you to be without knowing, brothers, that I've often meant to come to you (but was stopped up till now), so I could have some fruit among you too, the way I have among other nations. I'm in debt both to the Greeks and to the rough people, both to the wise and to the unwise. So, as much as is in me, I'm ready to preach the good news to you at Rome too. Because I'm not ashamed of the good news of Christ. Because it's the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and to the Greek too. Because in it the righteousness of God is shown from faith to faith. As it's written: The just will live by faith.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

15

So as far as it is up to me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you in Rome as well.

Plain English

So, as much as is in me, I'm ready to preach the good news to you at Rome too.

King James Version, 1611

So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

King James Version, 1611

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

The anger of God shown

For the anger of God is revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth down in unrighteousness. Because what can be known about God is plain to them, since God has shown it to them. forever since the creation of the world, his invisible qualities — his eternal power and his divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what he has made. So they are without excuse. Because although they knew God, they didn't glorify him as God or give him thanks. Instead their thinking became empty, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man, and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. So God gave them up to impurity through the cravings of their own hearts, to dishonour their bodies among themselves. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to shameful passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for what is against nature. And the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and burned in their desire for one another, men committing indecency with men, and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error. And since they didn't see fit to keep God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a worthless mind, to do what ought not to be done. They are filled with every kind of unrighteousness, immorality, wickedness, greed and malice. They are full of envy, murder, quarrelling, deceit and spite. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to their parents, without understanding, breakers of promises, without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful. And though they know the just order of God, that those who do such things deserve death, they not only do them but approve of others who do them.

Because the anger of God is shown from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of men, who hold back the truth in unrighteousness. Because what can be known of God is plain in them. Because God has shown it to them. Because the unseen things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made — his everlasting power and Godhead. So they've got no excuse. Because when they knew God, they didn't give glory to him as God or were thankful. But turned empty in what they thought, and their foolish heart was darkened. Making out they were wise, they turned into fools. And changed the glory of the God who doesn't rot into an image made like rotting man and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. So God gave them up too to uncleanness through the wants of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves. Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the created thing more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to shameful passions. Because even their women changed the natural use into what's against nature. And the men too left the natural use of the woman and burned in their wanting towards each other, men with men working what's not fitting, and getting back in themselves the payment of their error that was fitting. And just as they didn't like to keep God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a mind that couldn't judge, to do the things that aren't fitting. Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual sin, wickedness, greed, badness. Full of envy, murder, arguing, deceit, meanness. Whisperers, speakers behind backs, haters of God, ones who treat others badly, proud, boasters, thinkers up of evil things, disobedient to parents. Without understanding, breakers of promises, without natural love, hard to make peace with, without mercy. Who knowing the judgment of God, that the ones who do things like this deserve death, not only do the same but take pleasure in the ones who do them.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Plain English

Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the created thing more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

King James Version, 1611
