And after this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth was lit up with his glory. And he cried out mightily with a strong voice: Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen. She has become a home for devils, a haunt for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hateful bird. Because all nations have drunk the wine of the anger of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven saying: Come out of her, my people, so you don't share in her sins and don't receive her plagues. Her sins are piled as high as heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. Pay her back just as she rewarded you, and give her double according to her works. In the cup she filled, fill to her double. As much as she glorified herself and lived in luxury, give her that much torment and grief. Because she says in her heart, I sit a queen. I am no widow, and I will never see grief. So her plagues will come in one day — death and mourning and famine — and she will be burned up with fire. Because the Lord God who judges her is strong. And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and mourn over her when they see the smoke of her burning. They will stand a long way off for fear of her torment, saying: What a disaster for that great city Babylon, that mighty city — because your judgement has come in one hour. And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because nobody buys their cargo any more: cargoes of gold and silver and precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet, all thyine wood, every article of ivory, and every article of precious wood and bronze and iron and marble, and cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense, and wine and oil and fine flour and wheat, and beasts and sheep and horses and chariots, and slaves and souls of men. And the fruits your soul lusted after have gone from you. Everything luxurious and splendid has gone from you, and you will never find them again. The merchants who traded in these things and grew rich on her will stand a long way off for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing and saying: What a disaster for that great city, dressed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls — because in one hour such great riches came to nothing. And every ship's master, and everyone who sails anywhere, and sailors, and everyone who makes a living from the sea, stood a long way off and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning: What city was ever like this great city? And they threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing: What a disaster for that great city, where everyone who had ships at sea grew rich on her wealth — because in one hour she has been laid waste. Rejoice over her, heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, because God has avenged you on her. And a mighty angel picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying: That is how violently the great city Babylon will be thrown down, and she will never be found again. And the sound of harpists and musicians and pipers and trumpeters will never be heard in you again. And no craftsman of any trade will be found in you again. And the sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again. And the light of a candle will never shine in you again. And the voice of the groom and bride will never be heard in you again. Because your merchants were the great men of the earth, and by your sorceries all nations were deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of everyone who has been killed on the earth.
