Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are clean. But as for me, my feet nearly slipped; my steps almost gave way. I was envious of the foolish when I saw how well the wicked were doing. They seem to have no struggles in death; their strength stays firm. They aren't in trouble like other people, and they aren't plagued like other men. So pride hangs around their neck like a chain, and violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness; they have more than heart could wish. They are corrupt and speak wickedly about oppression; they speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth. So his people return here, and waters from a full cup are wrung out to them. They say, 'How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?' Look at these wicked people: always at ease, always increasing in riches. Surely I've cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hands in innocence for nothing. All day long I've been plagued and punished every morning. If I'd said, 'I'll speak like this,' I would have betrayed the generation of your children. When I tried to understand it, it was too painful for me — until I went into the sanctuary of God. Then I understood their end.

They get richer and richer. So I've kept my heart clean for nothing and washed my hands in innocence. Because I've been knocked about all day long and set straight every morning. If I'd said, I'll talk like this — look, I'd have broken faith with the generation of your children. When I thought about understanding this, it was too hard for me — till I went into the holy places of God. Then I understood how it ends for them.

And there is no one on earth I desire beside you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those far from you will perish. You've destroyed everyone who goes whoring away from you. But it's good for me to draw near to God. I've put my trust in the Lord GOD, so I can declare all your works.
