What you did in their days

God, we've heard it with our ears. Our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in the old days. You drove the nations out with your hand and planted them in. You destroyed the peoples and spread them out. They did not take possession of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them. It was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you favoured them. You're my King, God. Command Jacob's salvation. Through you we'll push down our enemies. Through your name we'll trample those who rise against us. Because I won't trust in my bow, and my sword won't save me. But you've saved us from our enemies and shamed those who hate us. We boast in God all day long, and praise your name forever. Selah.

God, we've heard it with our ears. Our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in the old days. You drove the nations out with your hand and planted them in. You wrecked the peoples and spread them out. Because they didn't get the land with their own sword, and their own arm didn't save them — it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your face, because you were pleased with them. You're my King, God. Give the orders for Jacob's salvation. Through you we'll push down the ones against us. Through your name we'll trample the ones who get up against us. Because I won't trust in my bow, and my sword won't save me. But you've saved us from the ones against us and shamed the ones who hate us. We boast in God all day long, and we'll thank your name forever.

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob. Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

You've thrown us off

But you've cast us off and shamed us, and you don't go out with our armies. You make us turn back from the enemy, and those who hate us loot us for themselves. You've handed us over like sheep for eating, and you've scattered us among the nations. You sell your people for next to nothing, and you don't get much from the price. You make us an insult to our neighbours, something those round us laugh at and sneer at. You make us a byword among the nations, something the peoples shake their heads at. My shame is before me all day long, and the shame of my face has covered me, Because of the voice of the one who insults and abuses, because of the enemy and the one bent on revenge. All this has come on us, and we haven't forgotten you or dealt falsely with your covenant. Our heart hasn't turned back, and our steps haven't gone off your way — Yet you've crushed us in a place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. If we'd forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a strange god, Wouldn't God search this out? Because he knows the secrets of the heart. For your sake we're killed all day long. We're counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake — why do you sleep, Lord? Arise; don't cast us off forever. Why do you hide your face and forget our suffering and how we're pushed down? Because our soul is bowed down to the dust. Our belly sticks to the earth. Arise for our help, and redeem us for your mercy's sake.

But you've thrown us off and shamed us, and you don't go out with our armies. You make us turn back from the enemy, and the ones who hate us loot us for themselves. You've handed us over like sheep for eating, and you've scattered us among the nations. You sell your people for nothing, and you don't get much from the price. You make us an insult to our neighbours, something the ones round us laugh at and sneer at. You make us a byword among the nations, something the peoples shake their heads at. My shame is in front of me all day long, and the shame of my face has covered me, because of the voice of the one who insults and abuses, because of the enemy and the one bent on payback. All this has come on us, and we haven't forgotten you or dealt falsely with your covenant. Our heart hasn't turned back, and our steps haven't gone off your way — though you've broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. If we'd forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a strange god, wouldn't God search this out? Because he knows the secrets of the heart. For your sake we're killed all day long. We're counted as sheep for the slaughter. Get up — why are you asleep, Lord? Wake up. Don't throw us off forever. Why do you hide your face and forget what we're copping and how we're pushed down? Because our soul is bowed down to the dust. Our belly sticks to the earth. Get up and help us, and buy us back for the sake of your faithful love.

But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price. Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies’ sake.
